If you try to look at the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, by definition a tattoo is an indelible mark or figure fixed upon the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars. In simple terms, it?s just giving your skin another color by putting indelible ink in your skin. The word ?tattoo? appears in the journal of one Joseph Banks, a naturalist aboard Captain Cook?s ship the HMS Endeavour in 1769: ?I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition? and this is the oldest known record known.
An USA Today article last June of 2006 showed the results of a study by the American Academy of Dermatology. According to the study, a large number of Americans roughly one out of four or 24% exactly between 18-50 years old are inked. The survey also shows that whatever your mother claimed about people who have tattoos is true. People who drink, engage in drugs, been to jail, or scrap religion are more likely to have a tat.
Around the world, tattoos have can be classified into 5 according to their purposes. First one off are tattoos applied for decoration and spiritual uses. These are tattoos that have ?ritual meaning?. These may vary based on the culture, but it ranges from rites of passage, marks of status, talismans or protective marks. Another function is for identification. Some people have been forcibly tattooed upon, especially during the Nazi era wherein identification numbers were intentionally tattooed on inmates in concentration camps during the Holocaust. Tattooing also has cosmetic uses. Cosmetic tattoos are used as a permanent alternative for makeup and also to neutralize skin discoloration. Tattoos are also used for fraternal or social motives; the way college fraternities or sororities have their members voluntarily tattoo the fraternity or sorority letters on themselves.
Judging from all those mentioned above, the range of purpose and uses of tattoos have given way to its rise in popularity. Although always connected with negativity, one such example is in Japan wherein tattoos are connected with the yakuza, an organized crime syndicate. Some people who have very conspicuous tattoos and other body modification also experience a very hard time finding gainful employment. But recently, pop culture has helped change society?s view on tattoos and tattooing. Rebellion is now the last thing that comes into people?s mind when they see a tattoo. Rather, they see a majestic work of art splashed on the world?s best piece of canvas.
