Food, fuel inflation accelerate in mid-September (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? India's food and fuel inflation accelerated in mid September, indicating persistently high inflationary pressures in the economy which may prompt the central bank to continue to tighten rates.

Food inflation accelerated on higher prices of pulses, eggs, meat and fish while fuel inflation also quickened because of higher prices of petrol and other deregulated fuels like aviation turbine fuel and naptha.

The food price index rose 9.13 percent and the fuel price index climbed 14.69 percent in the year to Sept. 17, government data on Thursday showed, the highest in more than a year.

In the previous week, annual food and fuel inflation stood at 8.84 percent and 13.96 percent, respectively.

The primary articles index was up 11.43 percent, compared with an annual rise of 12.17 percent a week earlier.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield rose 1 basis point to 8.35 percent after the food and fuel price data were released.

"The rise in the weekly food and fuel price numbers suggests that inflation is still sticky but for bond yields, the monetary policy stance would matter the most," said Vivek Rajpal, a fixed income strategist with Nomura in Mumbai.

A top adviser to the Prime Minister, C.Rangarajan, said on Thursday that supply side measures are needed to moderate food inflation.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised interest rates a dozen times in the past 18 months, but headline inflation remains at more than twice the bank's comfort level, confounding expectations that it was coming to the end of its tightening cycle.

The RBI lifted its policy lending rate, the repo rate, by 25 basis points to 8.25 percent this month, in line with expectations, in a campaign that has done more to slow growth than contain near double-digit inflation.

India's inflation in August accelerated to 9.78 percent, its highest in more than a year, from 9.22 percent recorded for July.

Free Business Advertising | Sheamusfan.org

Does free business advertising online really exist? Hundreds of small businesses advertise their services and products, yet their advertisements are typically not as successful as the bigger, more powerful businesses that are leaders in their industry. A common reason is that these small businesses only focus on building a name for themselves offline.

What many small businesses can?t seem to grasp is that the internet is a very powerful tool. Every single day, millions upon millions of people use the internet, and that number is increasing. Using the internet to advertise means potentially informing millions of people about your company, which is why all small businesses should seek free business advertising online?

Unlike offline advertising, there are many tools available that are designed to determine the results of an advertising campaign. Most small businesses don?t have the money that is needed for offline advertisements. Every single day, internet advertising is getting cheaper and more cost effective. Using online advertising will limit the amount of money spent on advertising while still bringing in satisfactory, or even extraordinary, results. There are many companies who even get themselves free business advertising online using Internet tools such as Social media sites, blogs, articles submissions, press releases and more. These companies get good results while investing absolutely nothing.

With online advertising, companies will reach a wide variety of potential customers.

The VIS is a powerful online tool that allows business owners to track the effectiveness of their online media advertisement. This new technology utilizes unique phone numbers in each advertising medium, allowing business owners to assess the effectiveness of each medium in one convenient online console set up by the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Company, Cybertegic.

?The key to Internet marketing and advertising is knowing which avenue to invest your marketing budget. Once you weed out which Internet marketing channel works and which doesn?t, placing your advertising budget to channels that actually work will not be a waste of investment,? says James Hsieh, CEO of Cybertegic, Inc.

The VIS tracks calls from banners, emails, keywords, PPC ads, keywords, and other affiliate marketing. It can record the conversation, note when the call occurred and for how long, and from which zip code the call originates. Real time metrics, analytics and data may instantly be downloaded or sent to the business owner via email.

?One of the main problems in Internet Marketing is assessing which marketing medium yield unfavorable results. If an e-commerce site is advertising on Google PPC, Yahoo PPC, Amazon, Ebay, etc, each of these mediums get a unique phone number. With the ability of VIS to track calls from each unique number, business owners will know which advertising medium works and which do not,? ends Hsieh.

Search for motive in California murder-suicide (AP)

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. ? Investigators searched for a motive in an apparent murder-suicide that left a man and woman dead and forced the lockdown of a Southern California high school. No students were injured.

The shooting occurred about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday after a school resource officer who works for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department heard what he thought was a gunshot coming from the parking lot at Patriot High School in Jurupa, said sheriff's spokeswoman Courtney Donowho. The school was immediately placed on a lockdown as sheriff's investigators searched the campus.

The officer found a man and woman in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, a bilingual education volunteer at the school, was pronounced dead at a hospital, the sheriff's department said. Their identities have been withheld pending notification of relatives.

No students were unaccounted for and they were released in three phases throughout the afternoon.

Most high schools in Riverside County have deputies who act as school resource officers, Donowho said.

"They are there for exactly these types of incidents," she said. "Our primary concern is student safety."

Jurupa is about 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Libya ready to probe possible other Lockerbie suspects (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libya's interim justice minister Mohammed al-Alagi said on Wednesday he was ready to work with Scottish authorities to probe the possible involvement of others in the Lockerbie bombing apart from the sole Libyan convicted for the attack.

His remark at news conference reversed a position he took only on Monday, when he said that as far as Libya was concerned the case of the bombing of the U.S.-bound airliner over the Scottish village of Lockerbie with the loss of 270 lives was closed.

Scottish prosecutors had asked Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) to give them access to papers or witnesses that could implicate more suspects in the attack, possibly including deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Asked on Wednesday about his response to this request, he said through an interpreter: "I'd like to confirm that we are accepting any facts that might arise in this regard, if there is any suspicion about any other person."

He added: "We will cooperate in this regard with whoever has any other facts, according to international treaties."

Former Libyan agent Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was convicted of the bombing in 2001 and sent to a Scottish prison to serve a life sentence. The Scottish government released him and sent him back to Libya on compassionate grounds in 2009 because he had cancer and was thought to have only months to live.

Another Libyan was acquitted of the case.

Megrahi's release and return to a hero's welcome in Libya angered many in Britain and the United States, home to most of the Lockerbie victims.

Alagi added on Wednesday that he welcomed the possibility of an investigation into the possibility of others' culpability because "this will lead to the acquittal of Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, who has been unjustly convicted in this case."

Scottish prosecutors noted that Megrahi's trial court had accepted he had not acted alone. Police at the time said they had submitted a list of eight other suspects whom they wanted to interview but that Gaddafi had refused to allow them to be questioned.

In March, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, Libya's former justice minister and now its interim leader, said he had evidence of Gaddafi's involvement in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

Megrahi's co-accused at the specially convened Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands in 2000 was Al-Amin Khalifa Fhimah, who was cleared of mass murder.

He told Sweden's Expressen newspaper last month that Gaddafi should be tried in court over widespread suspicions he ordered the bombing.

"There is a court and he is the one to explain whether he is innocent or not," Fhimah said. "He has to."

Author name: Ellan M.Z. Garsee

I get a considerable amount of criticism just for playing gaming system. ? What exactly 29 yr old working on playing gaming system? ? Aren?t an individual too old being playing X-box? I?ve heard it and somewhat honestly I will be getting exhausted by it. Video games are already associated with my life since i have was six yoa. That?s 23 ages, so with my eyes it?s regarding green hobby it?s similar to a fire. As Concerning gotten old I execute less but gaming system are still a major part of warring. So of which raises a question, ? should parents play gaming system or leave the theifs to the children? ?

To start with there have different ratings for gaming system just prefer movies are generally rated. You could have rated ? E? for every individual, ? T? just for teens and even ? M? just for mature. So with that said, would an individual let some sort of 5 yr old youngster go go to a rated M movie? Chances think you?re would definitely not because there might be adult vocabulary and physical violence. Well, similar principles affect video video game titles. Some games are meant for infants, while others are meant for experienced gamers age groups 18 or over. Take as an illustration Grand Burglary Auto 4 by Rockstar Video game titles. This is a fantastic video activity, however I might not make it possible for my infants play the software. The major reason being the game play has some sort of M history. There is usually more physical violence and artwork language with this game compared to a Terrantino show. The graphics heroes vi strategy guide game execute are great, not one the game features a great history line going without running shoes but it?s meant for just a mature viewers. My purpose is, some gaming system were specifically made for old gamers.

Modding your video game consoles are a lot more easy and even safer to complete than before specially when referring so that you can PS3 softmodding. Prior to now in obtain to play protected games you?d to have a modchip apparatus. This is indeed old technology owing to a completely new method described as PS3 softmod. Using this new modding technique it is easy to play burned off ps3 games and perhaps blu beam dvds definitely not matter precisely what region coding with out a modchip or simply exploit crack.

This could be the stumbling block for a lot of first timers testing out PS3 softmodding or simply homebrew just for PS3. Many pay a visit to websites that have software that may cause long run damage on the PS3 firmware and insure that it is hard auto repairs. or collect data that could be vital for their games. Its better to join away with sites that serve PS3 softmod packages that basically work and they are very dependable. Fortunately I may take about this site, so please keep reading..

Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Monash University, and Virginia Tech have used a set of novel inhibitors to analyze how the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, uses enzymes to chew up human hemoglobin from host red blood cells as a food source. They have validated that two of these parasite enzymes called peptidases are potential anti-malarial drug targets. The research appeared in the Aug. 15 early online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences.

"The basis for this research was to use small molecule inhibitors to help understand the biology of the malaria parasite and to find new drug targets as drug-resistant parasites necessitate the discovery of new antimalarials," said Doron C. Greenbaum, assistant professor of pharmacology at Penn, who lead the collaborative study.

The P. falciparum parasite, delivered in a mosquito bite, causes malaria once it takes up residence in the human host's red blood cells and begins to digest hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen. The parasite multiplies and is picked up from the bloodstream when the mosquito feeds. Scientists are interested in determining which enzymes are responsible for generating amino acids from the hemoglobin in the feeding process.

Two enzymes, called aminopeptidases, have been proposed as being responsible for releasing single amino acids from proteins, or peptides. However, "there has been controversy regarding where this takes place and which enzymes are responsible," said Michael Klemba, associate professor of biochemistry with the Vector-Borne Infectious Disease Research Group at Virginia Tech, who collaborated on the evaluation of new aminopeptidase inhibitors with Greenbaum's lab. "It has been difficult to study their specific roles in breaking down hemoglobin."

The Penn team developed chemical genetic tools called activity-based probes that enabled the researchers to specifically inhibit one or the other of the enzymes. "When we inhibited the parasite enzyme PfA-M1, it blocked hemoglobin degradation, starving the parasite to death," said Greenbaum.

Inhibition of a second enzyme, leucyl aminopeptidase, showed it to have an important role, but earlier in the parasite's life cycle within the red blood cell.

"Our collective data suggest that these two MAPs are both potential antiparasitic drug targets," said Greenbaum.

Other co-authors on the paper are Geetha Velmourougane, postdoctoral fellow at Penn; Seema Dalal, research scientist in biochemistry at Virginia Tech; Gilana Reiss, graduate student in Pharmacology, Penn; James C. Whisstock, Monash University, Logan Fellow and scientific director of the Victorian Bioinformatics Consortium; Ozlem Onder, postdoctoral associate in biology, and Dustin Brisson, assistant professor of biology, both at Penn; Sheena McGowan, senior research fellow at Monash University.

"Dr. Greenbaum's team developed the probes and Virginia Tech's researchers tested the probes on purified enzymes and determined the potency of the probes against each of the two aminopeptidases," said Klemba. "Dr. Whisstock's team at Monash University did the structural biology, providing the high-resolution atomic structure of the enzymes."

Alternatives We Can Do On Mortgage Refinancing

This article has been viewed 10 times.

Mortgage refinancing can turn into a normal habit for many people as you will discover no strict rules on how many times you can rearrange the mortgage on your house. Even so, penalties may possibly apply.

There are many benefits to mortgage refinancing, but people that come across themselves in constant debt at times use mortgage refinancing as a way out. This is absolutely not the top technique to manage debt. The household will in no way be paid off at that rate along with the homeowner ultimately stands the risk of losing their home. Studying greater solutions to manage debt is actually a far greater selection than constantly employing mortgage refinancing as a form of budgeting.

Before thinking of mortgage refinancing, look at other possibilities. How much of one?s present and planned future debt can you dispose of? Do you genuinely will need the new ?toy? you want to purchase? You wish that new quad, it is only $13,000.00 but, ask your self this question first: Is walking around the acreage or making use of the old pickup so bad? What will you do using the quad anyway beside running in water ditches and jumping ridges? Ponder, perhaps which is $13,000.00 you really don?t should add to your debt load.

Then there is certainly that big wedding. With creative mortgage refinancing you may pay for that dream wedding. Nonetheless, have you considered the ten or twenty year amortization you just added to your lifetime of debt? Along with that $20,000.00 ?windfall? from your new loan there may possibly be legal or disbursement fees to discharge the old mortgage, legal or disbursement fees to register the new mortgage, along with other administration fees you?ve got not even regarded as. Suddenly, the $20,000.00 dollar wedding has grown into $26,000.00 headache.

Do you comprehend that the equityyou have built up in your house more than time is eroded just about every time you borrow against the mortgage? The equity will be the difference between your home?s market value and also the outstanding balance of the mortgage. In plain English, your property equity may be the quantity you have already paid against the value of your house. Your home equity increases as you make more mortgage payments. For anyone who is constantly borrowing against the mortgage, you happen to be adding years of payments and wiping out any equity you?ve got gained.

A different selection inside the world of mortgage refinancing is to get a household equity line of credit. This loan is also based on your household equity. Instead of giving you the loan up front in a lump-sum, you?ll have ongoing access to funds up to an established credit limit by way of a line of credit. Watch out for that one if you are an uncontrolled spender! Great grandma left you her house debt free of charge, and you take out a home equity line of credit to spend like there is certainly no tomorrow. There?s no free lunch here. Each acquire you make on this line of credit is debt against the property. It devalues the equity already in the property. You can sink oneself in debt and loose the household faster than it took great grandma to pay for it.

One superior safety net is having a closed mortgage where your economic institution may not permit you to break your mortgage agreement. That may possibly be a benefit, stopping you from burying oneself in debt.

Financially responsible people today look at mortgage refinancing as an investment or when it truly is a last resort to obtain accumulated debt below control. The extra funds generated is often obtainable for household improvements, college tuition and major purchases. Weigh your alternatives cautiously and shop wisely.

Asia stocks sharply lower as recession fears flare (AP)

BANGKOK ? Investors across the globe continued to dump stocks Friday as weak indicators from major economies including China intensified fears of a new recession.

In Asia, losses were broad-based but less severe than in the U.S. and Europe. Oil prices stabilized near $81 a barrel after diving to a near seven-week low on Thursday. The dollar was down against the yen and the euro.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.7 percent to 17,610.65 after losing nearly 5 percent the day before.

South Korean shares took a large hit, with the Kospi tumbling 4.1 percent to 1,727.72 amid worries over signs of weakness in China, the export-dependent country's biggest trading partner. Japan's stock market was closed for a holiday.

Economic news was bad around the world. A closely watched survey in Europe indicated a recession could be on the way there, and a manufacturing survey suggested a slowdown in China, which has been one of the hottest economies. Employment figures in the U.S. remained weak.

"I think the most important thing is Europe and America are both entering into recession at the same time, and the governments failed to take decisive action to stop the decline," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings Ltd. in Hong Kong. "Investors are disappointed and fear a global recession. So that's why investors are getting out of shares."

Elsewhere in Asia, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.3 percent to 3,952.70. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, mainland China, the Philippines and New Zealand were also lower.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 3.5 percent to close at 10,733.83. It was the second consecutive rout in the stock market since Wednesday afternoon, when the Federal Reserve announced a change in strategy for fighting the economic slowdown.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index, a broader measure of the stock market, and the Nasdaq composite, which is more heavily weighted with technology stocks, both fell more than 3 percent for the day.

The Fed announced Wednesday that it would shuffle $400 billion of its own bond holdings in hopes of reducing interest rates on long-term loans, a plan known as Operation Twist. The central bank hopes that if people and businesses are able to borrow money more cheaply, they will spend throughout the economy and give it a lift.

Still, the Fed announcement troubled investors because it came with a bleak assessment of the future. The Fed said it sees "significant downside risks to the economic outlook," including volatility in overseas markets.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 60 cents at $81.11 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude plunged $5.41, or 6.3 percent, to settle at $80.51 on Thursday. That was its lowest point since Aug. 9.

In London, Brent crude for November delivery was up 75 cents at $106.24 on the ICE Futures exchange.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3526 from $1.3469 late Thursday in New York. Earlier on Thursday, the euro fell to $1.3384 ? its lowest point since Jan. 18. The dollar slipped to 76.27 yen from 76.40 yen.

Pope meets abuse victims during German trip (Reuters)

ERFURT, Germany (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict held a surprise meeting on Friday with victims of clerical sexual abuse and expressed his deep regret for their suffering, saying the church was committed to the protection of children, the Vatican said.

The private meeting came on the second day of Benedict's four-day trip to Germany, where record numbers of Catholics have officially left the faith in protest at clerical abuse, and where the Church faces some 600 requests for compensation.

The Pope was "moved and deeply shaken" and assured victims the Church was "committed to the promotion of effective measures to protect children," the Vatican said in a statement.

The meeting took place in a seminary in Erfurt, in eastern Germany, and was similar to those held by Benedict on other recent trips. The wording of the statement also mirrored those issued after previous meetings.

Victims' associations have said the Vatican has not done enough to bring the perpetrators to justice, a view echoed by German victims who joined 8,000 protesters on a march through Berlin, where the Pope began his visit.

Earlier on Friday the Pope visited the monastery where Martin Luther lived before launching the Reformation, and warned his Lutheran hosts that "a new form of Christianity" posed challenges to mainline Protestants and Catholics alike.

While not naming them, it was clear he was referring to the evangelical and Pentecostal churches which have spread rapidly, especially in developing countries, by attracting converts from more established churches.

He appealed for unity between Roman Catholics and Protestants, who began their split from the Catholic Church when Luther, who had lived in Erfurt as a Catholic monk, posted his 95 theses on a church door in 1517.

Few people turned out to see the pope in Erfurt, a Protestant city under tight security for the visit, but about 90,000 Catholics -- 40,000 more than expected -- flooded the nearby Catholic town of Etzelsbach for a vespers service.

Benedict told the Lutherans: "Faced with a new form of Christianity, which is spreading with overpowering missionary dynamism, sometimes in frightening ways, the mainstream Christian denominations often seem at a loss.

"This is a form of Christianity with little institutional depth, little rationality and even less dogmatic content, and with little stability. This worldwide phenomenon poses a question to us all: what is this new form of Christianity saying to us, for better and for worse?"

Geoff Tunnicliffe, Vancouver-based secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance, told Reuters his organization had recently issued a code of conduct for responsible missionary work with the Vatican and World Council of Churches.

"I don't see this as a blanket statement on evangelicals, which includes Pentecostals," he said. The three groups that signed the pioneering code of conduct in June, after five years' work, claim to represent over 90 percent of Christianity.

POPE DEFLECTS REFORM CALLS

While stressing Christian unity, Benedict deflected recent public appeals from Protestants for a relaxation of rules barring them from participating in Catholic communion.

He said it was a "political misunderstanding" to think he would come with an "ecumenical gift" such as permission for Protestants to receive the Catholic eucharist.

Germany's top Protestant bishop urged the pontiff to take "real steps for reconciliation" before the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, which the Protestants would like to mark with Catholic participation.

Luther is "as a hinge between our two churches, because he belongs to both," said Lutheran Bishop Nikolaus Schneider, head of the Evangelical Church in Germany. "It is time to heal the memories of the mutual injuries in the Reformation period and the subsequent history of our Churches."

Chancellor Angela Merkel, daughter of a Lutheran pastor, attended the service highlighted by interludes of sacred organ music by Johann Sebastian Bach and other German composers.

Erfurt, where atheism is also widespread after four decades of communism, gave the pope a cool reception. There were few posters or banners announcing his presence.

In a shop near the cathedral, atheist Dagmar Schneidert said: "I don't know anyone who is enthusiastic about the visit, only 7 percent of people in Erfurt are Catholic anyway. It's wasted money that could be used for something more meaningful."

The pope is due to hold an open-air mass in central Erfurt on Saturday at which Church officials expect 85,000 Catholics.

CATHOLICS AND MUSLIMS

At Etzelsbach, in the Eichsfeld region near the former Iron Curtain between East and West Germany, Benedict praised Catholics for keeping the faith despite pressure from "two godless dictatorships" -- Nazism and Communism.

"Eichsfeld is a very religious place," said Holungen Wiebert, 67. "We're very proud to have a German pope again, for the first time in 500 years."

Polish, Croatian and Bavarian flags in the crowd indicated some pilgrims had come long distances to see the pope.

Before leaving Berlin, Benedict met leaders of Germany's four million Muslims and promised cooperation with them as long as they respect Germany's constitution and the limits it sets on pluralism. Merkel warned Muslims last year that sharia, Islamic law, had no place in Germany.

Muslim leaders praised the pope for confirming through the meeting that Islam was now a part of German society, but said their loyalty to the constitution was never in question.

"As Muslims in Germany, we have always said that we see the German constitution as a good basis for peaceful life together," said Bekir Alboga, head of interreligious dialogue for the Turkish mosque association DITIB.

He said the pope's short address also represented a change from his controversial 2006 speech in Regensburg, where his use of a Byzantine emperor's quote about Islam being violent and irrational provoked protests across the Muslim world.

"The pope has now chosen a new approach in his meeting with Muslims," Alboga said. "I think one must look to the future and see where the possibilities for good cooperation are."

'Majors & Minors': Kinder 'Idol' for Tweens?

'Majors & Minors': Kinder 'Idol' for Tweens?

You have to be 15 to try out for American Idol, and even if you make it, you're competing against contestants who may have a decade or more experience than you. So what's a talented tween to do?

Now, these young aspiring singers have their own forum -- a new reality show, Majors & Minors. The series, which premieres Friday at 8 p.m. ET on The Hub, is a singing competition that brings together several established artists (the "majors") with 12 aspiring singers between the ages of 10 and 16 (the "minors"). Take a look at the preview below!

And no, this isn't a kid version of Idol. That's already been done, when Idol spun off American Juniors in the summer of 2003. That show failed to catch on, and went away after one season.

Majors and Minors is different. Technically, it's a competition, with the winner receiving a recording deal with RCA/Jive Label Group and an opportunity to be featured in a cross-country concert tour. But no one gets voted off. Instead, all 12 competitors will get acquainted with the music business through time spent in state-of-the-art music studios, with those who've already made it -- including Adam Lambert, Avril Lavigne, Brandy, Colbie Caillat, Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Sean Kingston, Will.i.am, and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder.

"It's not about critiquing, it's about uplifting," Brandy told E! Online. A big fan of the show's kinder, gentler approach, she said, "I think when you're that young, if you were to get voted off, it would mess with you mentally…in some way that's connected to losing. Even though it's not, because so many people have been voted off shows and become huge superstars. Jennifer Hudson, by the way."

Brandy was particularly impressed by 10-year-old Ashley Nicole Greene, who belted out Etta James' "At Last" and made it her own.

"These children are just amazing," said Brandy. "They're very very young, and they know exactly who they are. And that's the scary part, because we're supposed to…give them advice. I really didn't know what to say when I was there. I was trying to find something to say so I could sound cool on camera, but it was mind-blowing how these kids knew exactly who they were."

For the record, Brandy is something of an authority on early success: She was just 15 when she released her debut album.

U.N. will take weeks on Palestinian bid: Abbas (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday he expected the Security Council to finish debating his nation's application for full United Nations membership in weeks, not months.

Speaking to journalists on his plane back from the General Assembly in New York where he presented the request to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Abbas said Security Council members had initially appeared unenthusiastic about discussing the application.

But the mood appeared to change after he made a speech to the General Assembly on Friday, pressing the case for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, he said.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, has said it will block the application. Both governments say direct peace talks are the correct way for Palestinians to pursue peace. Washington holds veto power in the 15-member Security Council.

"We are talking about weeks not months," Abbas said of the Security Council deliberations, adding that the process could take a maximum 35 days.

Lebanon's U.N. ambassador said the Security Council would convene on Monday to discuss Abbas's application.

Abbas's statehood bid reflects his loss of faith after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the United States, and alarm at Israeli settlement expansion in occupied land that Palestinians want for a state.

Talking about a return to peace talks with Israel, Abbas said: "We will not deal with any initiative which does not contain a halt to settlement or the '67 borders."

Apart from the U.S. veto threat, it was unclear if the required nine of the body's 15 members would support the bid.

RECRUITING SUPPORT

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki told national radio officials still hoped to garner the required votes.

"Consultations continue, especially with Gabon, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which have yet to define their position," Maliki was quoted as saying.

Abbas told the reporters accompanying him of a tense atmosphere during the week: "We held dozens of meetings with dozens of delegations which were trying to avert our going to the Security Council," Abbas said.

Instead of going to the Security Council, the Palestinians, who have observer status at the U.N., could ask the General Assembly to vote to upgrade them to a non-member state which would give them membership of various U.N. agencies.

The General Assembly vote requires only a simple majority.

In his speech to the General Assembly, Abbas said: "I do not believe that anyone with a shred of conscience can reject our application ... and our admission as an independent state."

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke shortly afterwards, said peace could be achieved only through negotiations and dismissed the world body as a "theater of the absurd."

QUARTET CALL

After the two men's speeches, the quartet of Middle East peace negotiators -- the United States, Russia, the European Union and the U.N. -- called for a return to direct peace talks.

Netanyahu welcomed the quartet call but said the talks' success depended on an equal willingness from the Palestinians.

"If the quartet is calling for direct talks without preconditions ... I think this is a very important thing ... if there is a will then it will happen and if not, it won't and we have the will, let's hope they (the Palestinians) do too," Netanyahu said in an interview on Israeli Channel 10 recorded on Friday in New York and aired in Israel on Saturday night.

Abbas accepts negotiations are still necessary, but argues statehood will put Palestinians on a more equal footing. Israel sees the U.N. bid as an attempt to erode its own legitimacy.

Palestinians want to establish a state in the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave controlled by Islamist Hamas who oppose peace talks, and in the West Bank with East Jerusalem as the capital, land Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War.

Humans reached Asia in two waves

Some early migrants interbred with mysterious Neandertal sister group

Web edition : Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

DNA extracted from a 40,000-year-old pinky bone and a 100-year-old lock of hair has provided glimpses of two Stone Age human migrations to Asia, including an early foray marked by interbreeding between ancient people and some mysterious, well-traveled members of the human evolutionary family.

Denisovans, an ancient humanlike population previously identified via nuclear DNA taken from a finger bone excavated in Siberia?s Denisova Cave, contributed a small portion of genes to living New Guineans, Australian aborigines, two aboriginal groups in the Philippines and populations on several nearby islands, say geneticist David Reich of Harvard Medical School in Boston and his colleagues.

Earlier analyses of modern human mitochondrial DNA, which is maternally inherited, had suggested that a single wave of humans took a southern coastal route from Africa to Asia around 65,000 years ago. Patterns of nuclear DNA alterations in an ancient Denisovan and in living groups instead point to at least two Stone Age human migrations into Asia, Reich?s team reports in a paper published online September 22 in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

A one-two punch of human migrations into Asia, including early interbreeding with the mysterious Denisovans, also emerges from an inspection of an Australian aboriginal man?s DNA, led by geneticist Morten Rasmussen of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Those results appear in a paper published online September 22 in Science.

Both new reports advance the idea that, after leaving Africa, modern humans interacted with a greater number of humanlike groups than are documented in the fossil record, remarks anthropologist John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin?Madison. Now that scientists can isolate ancient DNA from nondescript bits of bone, ?we?re discovering lost peoples whose existence we never suspected,? Hawks says.

Several Chinese sites have yielded hominid fossils that may come from Denisovans, says anthropologist Jean-Jacques Hublin of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. These fossils date to between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago and don?t appear to him to belong to Homo sapiens or Homo erectus, a possible direct ancestor of modern humans.

?Denisovan genetic material in New Guinea, Melanesia and Australia implies that this ancient group peopled a territory much broader than the southern part of Siberia where it was first identified,? Hublin says.

An initial human spread into Asia included ancestors of groups now living in eastern Oceania, some of whom interbred with Denisovans, Reich?s group concludes. Earlier evidence from the same team indicated that New Guineans and residents of neighboring Bougainville Island inherited 4 to 6 percent of their DNA from Denisovans, a sister group of Neandertals (SN: 1/15/11, p. 10). A second migratory wave brought ancestors of present-day East Asians and Indonesians, who didn?t dally with Denisovans.

Intriguingly, H. sapiens interbred with Neandertals upon reaching western Asia (SN: 6/5/10, p. 5) and with Denisovans upon reaching southeastern Asia, says molecular anthropologist Mark Stoneking of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, a study coauthor with Reich. In both instances modern human populations contained relatively few individuals, creating pressure to mate with outsiders in order to expand group numbers, Stoneking speculates.

Reich?s team compared Denisovan DNA to that of 260 people from 33 Asian populations. Denisovan genetic signatures are easily recognizable in the DNA of people today, Reich says.

Australian aborigines share as much DNA with Denisovans as do New Guineans, the researchers say. Several other island populations in eastern Oceania display lesser amounts of Denisovan genetic material. Groups in Indonesia and mainland Asia possess no Denisovan genetic remnants.

All non-Africans possess roughly the same amount of Neandertal DNA, about 1 percent to 4 percent. That?s consistent with a single human migration out of Africa about 65,000 years ago, followed by interbreeding with Neandertals in western Asia, Reich says. A trek to Southeast Asia then must have occurred. Common ancestors of New Guineans and Australian aborigines mated with Denisovans there at least 44,000 years ago, before journeying to their current homelands, the scientists estimate. Ancestors of East Asians and Indonesians arrived in a later migration.

Further genetic evidence that ancient people reached Asia in at least two waves ? the first of which interbred with Denisovans ? comes from a preserved lock of hair that an Australian aboriginal man donated to scientists about 100 years ago. Rasmussen?s group compared the man?s DNA, and that of three Chinese individuals, to genetic sequences of living Africans and Europeans, as well as to Denisovan DNA.

Australian aborigines trace their ancestry to a human migration into Southeast Asia sometime between 75,000 and 62,000 years ago, the investigators estimate. Denisovans interbred to a slightly lesser extent with ancestors of Australian aborigines than with ancestors of New Guineans, they find.

A second round of human arrivals gave rise to East Asians starting between 38,000 and 25,000 years ago, Rasmussen and his colleagues propose. As in Reich?s study, most current Asian populations studied by Rasmussen?s team lack Denisovan DNA.

By the time of the second human migration into Asia, early arrivers had displaced or replaced Denisovans in Southeast Asia, Hublin suggests.

Further investigations of the genetic history of Australian aborigines will reveal much about human evolution, Hawks predicts. Unlike most people today, these hardy foragers have DNA uncluttered by the relatively recent evolutionary legacy of agricultural lifestyles.
