Siemens CEO to fight for his job: paper

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Siemens Chief Executive Peter Loescher plans a probably doomed fight for his job at Wednesday's supervisory board meeting, a German newspaper said, after the German industrial group said at the weekend it would sack him.

Pressure had been mounting on Loescher after he repeatedly misjudged demand development in the group's main markets, and last week appeared to provide the final straw when Siemens scrapped its 2014 profit margin targets.

Citing company sources, Sueddeutsche Zeitung said on Monday that Loescher was only willing to resign if Chairman Gerhard Cromme, who hired him six years ago, also quit.

Otherwise, Loescher hoped to pull together the necessary two-thirds majority to prevent being fired, though boardroom sources told the paper he had no hope of succeeding.

Shares in Siemens, Germany's No. 2 company by market value and a bellwether of Europe's biggest economy, rose as much as 2.3 percent in early trade on Monday and were 0.9 percent higher at 80.37 euros by 0804 GMT.

Sources have said finance chief Joe Kaeser, who has spent his entire career at Siemens, was the most likely candidate to replace Loescher, which analysts welcomed.

"Kaeser's experience and detailed knowledge of the company make him suitable to succeed Loescher, and we appreciate the breadth of his qualification and experiences," Commerzbank analyst Ingo-Martin Schachel said.

Others said they expected that Kaeser would quickly tighten the reins on costs and sell more non-core businesses, such as the units making rail technology or healthcare software.

Talk about making a splash. The Cuban-American swimmer dove into stardom after taking home 5 medals (two gold, two silver, one bronze) at the 2012 London Olympics, bringing him to a grand total of 11 Olympic medals. This feat is only second best to fellow competitor Michael Phelps and indicates Lochte?s rise within the sport. Leon Washington wants to go beyond special teams for Patriots

Leon Washington is ready to do more than just return kicks and punts for the New England Patriots.

But if that?s all the free agent signee gets to do for his new team, he sounds ready to live with it.

?Ever since I was a rookie, I was always a team player,? Washington said Sunday, after the team?s first full-pads practice. ?That?s been my main focus. Knowing I could so many different things well -- running the ball, catching the ball, returning kicks, (I) even made tackles (on special teams) sometimes in my career.

?That?s the same approach I have here - coming in, helping the team out the best way I can.?

Washington, now 31, debuted with the New York Jets and played the last three seasons with Seattle. A 98-yard kick return for a touchdown last year gave him eight kick return TDs in his seven-year career, tying him with Josh Cribbs for the NFL record.

With Danny Woodhead leaving the Patriots for San Diego, there?s an opening for an all-purpose third-down back in New England. Shane Vereen will likely get most of that work and there?s a chance Washington won?t get much time.

?He?s played back there before but not a lot recently with the Seahawks,? Belichick said. ?We?ll put him in our system, teach him the things that he needs to learn at that position, evaluate him with the other players.?

Washington?s offensive plays indeed dwindled the last two years. Asked if that was disappointing, though, he said, ?No, not really.

?Obviously, I?m a competitor and want to be on the football field, want to be out there and help the team out as much as I can. But not really - we won a bunch of games when I was in Seattle, being a team player is the most important thing.?

He said he came to New England for the ?obvious? reasons.

?You watch this organization from afar, you see how well they do things here,? he said. ?It?s a winning organization. They believe in winning, they believe in competing.

?The most important thing that I love, that I?ve seen so far, is everybody is all about the team. Everybody is going to do whatever they do to help the team win. That?s impressive, watching it from afar. Everything when they guys come out and compete, hear them talking to the media, hear guys talking in the weight room, everything is all about the team.?

Belichick said the first day in pads is the start of the evaluation process of the bigger players on the team - the tacklers and blockers.

?It feels great,? said veteran guard Logan Mankins, who spent much of his morning dealing with Vince Wilfork on the other side of the line. ?Pretty tired right now but it?s always nice to start playing real football - to see where you?re at where you need to go.?

Wilfork stripped Stevan Ridley of the ball in a goal-line situation, one of two fumbles by Ridley on the day. (Jerod Mayo snared the other one out of the air), which led to some extra running for the back.

    Notes

Tim Tebow was a bit better on Day 3 - hardly perfect, but better -- connecting on a pair of long touchdown passes. . Tom Brady had a pass intercepted by Kyle Arrington. . Rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson had another strong day and fellow rookie Josh Boyce made his first impression. . Actor Robert Duvall, who has visited the Whitey Bulger murder trial, was at camp chatting with New England owner Robert Kraft. Also spotted: former Pats Troy Brown and Christian Fouria. . Belichick said defensive end Armond Armstead is on the non-football illness list for something not related to previous heart problems. . Linebacker Dane Fletcher, who missed all last season with a knee injury, is on the field. ?I don?t think he?s had any physical limitations to what we?ve done,? Belichick said. . The quarterbacks have video cameras attached to their helmets, another evaluation tool. ?We?ll take a look at it and see what we get out of it,? Belichick said. . Former linebacker Tedy Bruschi and retiring broadcaster Gil Santos will enter the team?s Hall of Fame before Monday night?s practice.

Presentation College in Aberdeen raises profile with new suites, more

Business After Hours at Presentation College

? What: Presentation College is hosting a networking mixer sponsored by the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce. Attendees can tour the facilities at the new wellness center.

    ? When: 5:15-7 p.m. Aug. 8.

? Where: Strode Center at Presentation College, 1500 N. Main St.

? RSVP: Call 605-225-2860 or email info@aberdeen-chamber.com by Aug. 7.

? Cost: $12 with an RSVP and $14 the day of the event.

    ?

?Presentation College's marketing slogan is "Stand Out" and the school is doing that as it works to raise its profile in Aberdeen and beyond.

?New suites for a growing student population are being built on campus. Half will be done before the fall semester begins, said Presentation marketing and public relations director Tim Beckham.

?The other half will be completed later in the fall. The suites will be able to house an additional 158 students, which will more than double housing capacity. Suites at the northwest end of campus can house 144 students.

?Another change to campus will be the conversion of the Strode Activity Center parking lot into a central campus green with benches and other features.

?At the Strode, a new Wellness Center is being completed. Machines and other weightlifiting equipment were installed last week. The center is for athletic training, as well as for use by faculty, staff and students.

?Beckham and administrators such as athletic director Brian Spielbauer and admissions director Adam Jenkins are working to increase visibility of the school.

?"We're on the north side of town, so people might not regularly see what's going on," Beckham said.

?The Aberdeen campus isn't the only one changing. The PC site in Sioux Falls recently moved into a new facility.

? There are other changes as well. Longtime vice president for enrollment JoEllen Lindner resigned from her post in January to take a job as president of the Aberdeen Catholic School System.

?"Any time you lose someone at PC, especially someone with a lot of experience who has helped expand the institution, it's not easy to replace them," Beckham said.

?Jenkins joined the staff a few weeks ago to fill the admissions director position.

?"I was really impressed when I saw they were progressing in this way," Jenkins said of the college.

?Jenkins was previously the interim director of admissions at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He also worked at University of Mary.

More than 100 teens rescued in weekend sex-trafficking raids, FBI says

By Pete Williams and Erin McClam, NBC News

More than 100 teenagers ? many of them children from broken homes ? were rescued over the weekend in a sex-trafficking crackdown that swept more than 70 cities, the FBI said Monday.

The youngest victim was 13 years old, the agency said.

The sting resulted in the arrest of 159 ?pimps? from San Francisco to Miami who were involved in the commercial exploitation of both adults and children, said Ronald Hosko, assistant director of the FBI?s criminal investigative division.

It was the FBI?s largest action to date focusing on the recovery of sexually exploited children, and took law enforcement agencies to streets, motels, casinos and social media platforms, Hosko said. He said he hoped it would focus attention on sex trafficking, ?this threat that robs us of our children.?

The pimps preyed in particular on troubled children, authorities said. In some of the cases, they used a popular online classified site, Backpage, to sell the children for sex, authorities said.

?From a parent?s point of view, from a law enforcement professional?s point of view, it would be enough to look through the eyes of these children and think or say, ?Nobody cares about me,?? Hosko said.

The victims are overwhelmingly girls, and the pimps sometimes entice them with compliments or asking whether they want to make some money. The girls become trapped in a cycle that can involve drugs, physical abuse, even torture, Hosko said.

The sweep was the seventh iteration of Operation Cross Country, part of a partnership begun a decade ago by federal authorities and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to address child prostitution.

The sting, over three days beginning Friday, demonstrate ?how many of America?s children are being sold for sex every day, many on the Internet,? said John Ryan, the center?s president and CEO.

Criminal charges against the 159 will include human trafficking, authorities said.

An estimated 240,000 children in the United States are considered at risk of sexual exploitation.

Meilutyte, other teens doing just fine at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? For Ruta Meilutyte, a gold medal would merely be a bonus.

She's already grabbed what she came for at these world swimming championships.

A breakout star at last year's London Olympics, the 16-year-old from Lithuania set the first world record of the meet Monday night ? in the semifinals of the 100-meter breaststroke, no less.

Meilutyte will be an overwhelming favorite in the final Tuesday, but she considers the record a bigger accomplishment than a world championship. She nearly broke the mark during the morning preliminaries, then returned in the evening to go even faster.

The youngster touched in 1 minute, 4.35 seconds, beating the record set by American Jessica Hardy in 2009 at the end of the rubberized suit era.

"My biggest aim is accomplished now and I'll give it my best shot in the final," said Meilutyte, who trains in Britain. "It's one of the steps, one of the dreams. Obviously, a gold medal would be a cherry on top."

The kids are doing all right at these worlds, that's for sure.

Eighteen-year-old Missy Franklin cruised into the final of the 100 backstroke as the top qualifier, despite a tough start in the semifinals when her right leg slipped while pushing off the wall. Another young American, 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, followed up her gold medal in the 400 freestyle by easily qualifying for the 1,500 free final.

"It's so incredible to see the youth that the sport has and that it will continue to have," Franklin said. "It's so awesome watching it and kind of being a part of this whole experience as it's happening."

There were no American golds on the second night of swimming at the Palau Sant Jordi.

Christian Sprenger made sure the Australian men won't endure another gold-medal shutout like the one in London, edging South African world-record holder Cameron van der Burgh in the men's 100 breast.

"To finally have the Australian anthem played for me, it's an extraordinary feeling, and after a swim I couldn't be prouder of," Sprenger said. "Our team had some setbacks last year, but we came through stronger. We are going to be back and going to be stronger."

Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom knocked off another world-record holder, Dana Vollmer of the U.S., in the 100 butterfly. For Sjostrom, the victory came four years after she won the same event at the world championships in Rome, which was followed by the bitter disappointment of fourth-place finishes at both the 2011 worlds and the Olympics.

"It's hard to believe because my confidence hasn't been that good after lots of fourth places," she said. "Now I am so happy. My confidence is so much better now. I know I can swim so much faster."

Vollmer, who took an extended break after the Olympics and came into the event battling an illness, settled for the bronze with a time more than a second off her gold-medal performance in London.

"The goal is to always try and win, but with where I am right now I am really happy with the bronze," Vollmer said. "I needed the fall off to recharge looking to 2016. It is disappointing now, but it lights that fire to get back in the pool and keep working hard for Rio."

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu ran away with a dominating win in the women's 200 individual medley, with Ye Shiwen among those in her wake. The 17-year-old from China, another of the young stars at the last Olympics, was last at the final turn and settled for fourth ? not even making the medal podium in Barcelona.

Ye swept the IMs in London, setting a world record in the 400.

"That was slower than expected but I did everything I could," she said through a translator. "After the Olympics I couldn't sleep, so I couldn't prepare like I had done before. I'm five kilograms heavier than I was at the Olympics. I need to go back and train harder and hopefully I'll do better next time. I was happy with my butterfly but nothing else."

Hosszu made it look easy, leading at every stroke change and cruising to the wall nearly 1.5 seconds ahead of the field.

"That was kind of my plan to go out and be aggressive from the beginning," she said. "I saw nobody was coming, so I just wanted to touch the wall and start celebrating."

Hosszu finished nearly 7 seconds behind Ye in the 200 IM at London, and just missed a medal with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM.

This time, it was Ye coming over to shake hands with the winner.

"I was really surprised," Hosszu said. "I wasn't sure of the order after me. It was only later I saw she wasn't on the podium. I am sure she will be back on the podium. She is a great swimmer."

Longtime Brazilian star Cesar Cielo took gold in the 50 fly ? a non-Olympic event ? with Eugene Godsoe of the U.S. grabbing the silver.

But Meilutyte was the star of the night without even winning a medal.

She just keeps getting better after upsetting American Rebecca Soni for the Olympic gold in the 100 breast last summer. With Soni taking the year off, there's no doubt that Meilutyte is the new queen of the breaststroke ? at the moment and perhaps years to come.

"It's a new breed of swimmer coming up," van der Burgh said. "The 100 has become more of a sprint than it was before. If you are too slow than you can never catch up, and I think that's the big change."

Australia's Alicia Coutts didn't win gold but deserved a shout-out for pulling off a grueling double. She finished second in both the 100 fly and 200 IM, one night after anchoring the Aussies to silver in the 400 free relay.

Coutts was in tears after getting caught by American Megan Romano in the relay, feeling she let her team down, but the Aussie is piling up quite a medal haul in Barcelona.

The home crowd got a thrill when Mireia Belmonte of Spain won bronze in the 200 IM.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lochte put himself in position to take a run at his first individual gold of these championships. He was the second-fastest qualifier in the semifinals of the 200 free behind Russia's Danila Izotov.

Russia's largest search engine Yandex has announced the death of co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Ilya Segalovich. The technical creator behind one of the world?s leading IT companies died of cancer at the age of 48.

Ilya Segalovich died on Saturday afternoon in one of London?s hospitals after his artificial breathing machine was switched off by doctors who on Thursday diagnosed their patient with brain death.

On Sunday, the news was confirmed by Yandex?s spokesman. The company?s co-founder and CEO Arkady Volozh explained in a blog post that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer metastases in September last year, but miraculously recovered from the disease, having undergone chemotherapy.? However, just last week Segalovich?s doctors found a tumor in his brain, which, complicated by meningitis, proved fatal.

?I was friends with Ilya since school; we sat behind the same desk for four years. And then we created Yandex together. Last night he died. Everything happened too quickly and unexpectedly,? one of Volozh?s posts reads.

Ilya Segalovich and Arkady Volozh founded Yandex in 1997. After 15 years of development the company became the leader of the Russian internet search market, beating American rival Google locally.

The Yandex co-founder Ilya Segalovich (RIA Novosti)

It was Segalovich who thought up the name Yandex, which stands for ?Yet Another iNDEX? and also contains Russian letter ? which means ?I? the company?s website informs.
    ?
According to Alexa.com, Yandex is the most popular Russian website and 20th most-popular internet portal in the world, providing over 50 services including internet search, news, mail, weather forecasts, maps, traffic information, etc.
    ?
An oversubscribed Yandex IPO in New York in 2011 raised $1.4 billion, more than any other internet company IPO since Google?s in 2004. Today company market value is estimated at $10 billion.
    ?
Member of the Yandex board of directors, where his voice ?weighted? 6.87 percent of the shareholder voting rights, Segalovich owned 2.5 percent of the Yandex shares worth $250 million.

    Criticism of Google and Apple

In 2012 Ilya Segalovich lashed at Google, maintaining that the American company is anticompetitive.
    ?
In April interview to The Guardian chief technology officer at Yandex accused Google of overindulgent use of its dominant position on the market to shut out rival companies in cyber space.
    ?
Google?s primary weapons to hinder competitors are its Chrome browser and Android platform, Segalovich said last year.
    ?
The California giant's mobile platform Android is a "strange combination of openness and not openness," Segalovich added.
    ?
"You cannot contribute to [Android], it's semi-open source? If you download an application it does not work if it's not Android marketplace. So that's an interesting question," Segalovich pointed out.
    ?
In the same interview Russian IT specialist shared he did not believe in the Apple business model because it creates a "closed ecosystem".
    ?
?I myself don't like the closed platforms; I think it is important that you have choice.??

    Philanthropist and opposition sponsor

Born in the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) in 1964, Segalovich went to school in the then-USSR?s Kazakhstan, but finally graduated from Moscow Geological Exploration Institute where, he studied geophysics.
    ?
Segalovich and his wife Maria Yeliseeva, with whom he had several children, founded Maria?s Children charity helping Russian orphans to adapt to society. The family had six children, three from Yeliseeva?s previous marriage, one child of their own and three foster girls.
    ?
In an interview to Forbes he revealed that worked as a volunteer election observer during the 2012 presidential elections in Russia. Segalovich was also sponsoring opposition Coordination Council, announced opposition blogger Aleksey Navalny on Thursday.
    ?
?I don?t know what can replace his encyclopedic knowledge of technology, and his pure vision of the product," Yandex co-founder Arkady Volozh wrote in a statement. "But he has left behind a whole new generation of programmers, a whole school. And his ethical standards are a benchmark for us all.?

Syrian troops capture historic mosque in Homs

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian government forces captured a historic mosque in the central city of Homs on Saturday, expelling rebel forces who had been in control of the 13th century landmark for more than a year and dealing a symbolic blow to opposition forces.

State-run news agency SANA quoted an unnamed military official as saying that troops took control of the Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque in the heavily disputed northern neighborhood of Khaldiyeh.

Syrian TV aired a report Saturday night with footage from inside the mosque, showing heavy damage and the tomb's dome knocked out. The footage showed debris strewn on the floor and a portion of the mosque appeared to have been burned.

The mosque, famous for its nine domes and two minarets, has been a symbol for rebels in the city that is known as "the capital of the revolution." On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam.

After capturing the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanon border last month, government troops launched an offensive on rebel-held areas in Homs, Syria's third largest city, late in June. They have been pushing into Khaldiyeh and other neighborhoods in the Old City that have been under opposition control since 2011.

A Homs-based activist who identified himself only by his nickname, Abu Bilal, for fear of government reprisals, said troops entered the mosque area from the east. He said regime forces now control more than 60 percent of Khaldiyeh.

"There are very fast developments in Khaldiyeh," Abu Bilal told The Associated Press via Skype. He said he had no further details from local rebel commanders.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy fighting around the mosque, saying the government troops are backed by members of Lebanon's Hezbollah group.

A journalist embedded with Syrian troops told the AP that a reporter for Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam television station was wounded near the mosque. A sniper's bullet struck the thigh of journalist Roa al-Ali, the journalist said, asking his name not be made public as he wasn't authorized to give information to other media outlets.

On top of its symbolic value, Homs is also a geographic lynchpin in Syria. The main highway from Damascus to the north as well as the coastal region, which is a stronghold of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, runs through Homs. Both rebels and the regime place a high strategic value on the city.

And although Assad's forces have been on the offensive in recent months, activists say the regime wants to capture the entirety of Homs to include it in a potential future Alawite state ? stretching from Homs to the coast ? where Assad could make his last stand if the civil war swings against him.

Assad is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while most of the rebels fighting to topple his regime are Sunnis.

Khaldiyeh had a population of about 80,000 but only some 2,000 remain there today as residents fled the violence. The heavy fighting over the past two years has destroyed wide areas and knocked down entire buildings.

Earlier Saturday, Syria's state media said talks between the Syrian government and a United Nations delegation tasked with investigating chemical weapons allegations in the nation's civil war have "resulted in an agreement on ways of moving forward."

Assad's government invited a U.N. team to visit Damascus earlier this month after requesting that the world body investigate an alleged chemical attack in Khan al-Assal, a village in the north. The Syrian regime and the rebels fighting to topple it accuse each other of using chemical agents in the March 19 incident, which killed 31 people.

Assad's government refused to have a possible inquiry include other alleged chemical attack sites in Homs, Damascus and elsewhere.

A joint statement by the foreign ministry and the U.N. that appeared Saturday on SANA's website said the meetings were "comprehensive and fruitful and resulted in an agreement on ways of moving forward."

It did not elaborate. The U.N. team couldn't be reached for comment.

Saturday's announcement on the possible U.N. probe agreement on Khan al-Assal coincided with government allegations that the rebels committed "a massacre" in the village, killing 123 "civilians and military personnel," according to a SANA report. SANA said others are still missing.

The report said "terrorists" were behind the recent killings in Khan al-Assal, a term the government uses for rebels. The Observatory previously said at least 150 government soldiers were killed on Monday and Tuesday there, some after they had surrendered.

A statement released by al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra ? or the Nusra Front ? said 150 soldiers, pro-government gunmen and Shiite militiamen were killed in Khan al-Assal. The statement said fighters captured 63 soldiers alive but 55 of them fled. Nusra Front said its members killed 15 of them before 40 surrendered. The statement did not say if the 40 were still alive.

The conflicting claims could not be independently reconciled.

In Aleppo, a rocket fired by government forces into a rebel-held district killed at least 29 including 19 under the age of 18 and four women, the Observatory said Saturday. The attack happened Friday during government shelling in the Bab al-Nairab neighborhood of Aleppo.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 largely as peaceful protests against Assad's rule. It escalated into a civil war after opposition supporters took up arms to fight a brutal government crackdown on dissent.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to the U.N.'s recent estimate.

Tropical Storm Flossie formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and strengthened quickly on July 25. NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Flossie and captured an infrared look at the storm and saw a large area of powerful thunderstorms around its center and south of the center.

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. AIRS captured an infrared image of Tropical Storm Flossie on July 25 at 10:05 UTC (6:05 a.m. EDT). Infrared data helps determine temperature, such as the cloud top and sea surface temperatures. AIRS data revealed that Flossie's strongest storms and heaviest rains were around its center and in a fragmented band of thunderstorms south of the center. Those areas had cloud top temperatures near -63F/-52C, indicating very high thunderstorms.

The National Hurricane Center or NHC noted that at 8 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. EDT) the center of Tropical Storm Flossie was near latitude 15.3 north and longitude 125.6 west. Flossie is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 kph) and is expected to continue in that direction for the next couple of days. Flossie's maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph (65 kph) and NHC expects some strengthening during the next 48 hours. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1003 millibars.

The NHC's current forecast track takes Flossie toward Hawaii as a depression by Tuesday, July 30.

Deposed Egyptian president held in prison break probe

    CAIRO | Fri Jul 26, 2013 5:54am EDT

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian authorities have detained deposed President Mohamed Mursi for 15 days over an array of accusations, including killing soldiers and conspiring with the Palestinian group Hamas, the state news agency said on Friday.

The report came just hours before millions of Egyptians were expected to take to the streets in mass rallies for and against Egypt's first freely elected leader, who was ousted by the military on July 3.

Friday's step provided legal grounds for the continued detention of Mursi, who has been held by the military since he was ousted. The charges relate to his escape, along with other top Brotherhood leaders, from a prison north of Cairo.

The report on the state news agency said investigating judge Hassan Samir had confronted Mursi with evidence during his questioning. It did not say when or where he had been questioned.

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, which says the army has staged a coup against the democratically elected head of state, described the accusations as "ridiculous". Gehad El-Haddad said the move marked the return of the "old regime".

Mursi and many other Brotherhood leaders were rounded up by the authorities during the 2011 uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power.

The accusations listed against Mursi included arson, destruction of prison records and "collaboration with Hamas to undertake aggressive acts in the country, attacking police facilities, officers and soldiers".

It also accused him of "killing some prisoners, officers and soldiers deliberately and with prior intent". It added the accusation of "kidnapping some officers and soldiers".

The authorities have issued a gag order stipulating the media may only publish official statements on the case, citing the secrecy of the investigations and national security.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the probe marked a "grave development", adding that the new government "viewed the Palestinian cause as hostile".

"We challenge the current rulers of Egypt to bring a single piece of evidence on their alleged claim Hamas has intervened in internal Egyptian affairs," he told Reuters.

Apple could pay dearly in ebook case

About two weeks ago, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote ruled that Apple conspired with book publishers to raise the price of e-books across the industry. If you recall, five publishing companies -- Penguin, Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Hachette -- were also targeted by the DOJ but all decided to settle instead of trying their luck in court.

Apple, however, took a principled stance, asserting that it wasn't going to admit to something it didn't do. In doing so, and subsequently coming out on the wrong end of Cote's decision, Apple may wind up having to fork over a lot of cash.

Gigaom, citing a recently publicized court document, writes that Apple may end up paying close to $500 million in damages when all is said and done.

Apple could pay dearly in ebook case

The chart above shows that publishers thus far have already paid out approximately $166 million in damages for their role in the "conspiracy."

Meanwhile, the total amount of damages Apple may be on the hook for is $218.8 million. The rub, however, is that Apple may be on the hook for triple damages. That results in a damages amount of $656.6 million. Less the damages already paid out by publishers leaves us with a final tally of approximately $490 million.

As for why Apple may end up paying triple damages, Jeff Roberts wrote the following back in early July:

Apple is in a different position. It vehemently denies wrongdoing and has fought the price-fixing accusations at all turns, in court and in the press. Now, if a verdict is entered after the damages phase of the trial, Apple is on the hook to pay special damages under a section of the Clayton Act that automatically triples antitrust awards. Apple's liability, according to lawyer Jeff Friedman, will be determined by this formula: harm to consumers x 3, minus the $166 million paid by the publishers.

It's worth noting that Friedman is a partner with the law firm leading the class action charge in this particular case.

Apple, of course, has every intention of appealing the decision, but legal scholars contacted by AllThingsD in the wake of the verdict were pessimistic about Apple's chances to prevail on appeal.

UC Berkeley Law Professor Pam Samuelson explained:

Apple may have a tough time getting this ruling reversed because the judge made findings of fact about the antitrust violation that appellate courts typically defer to. Most reversals happen as to interpretations of the law.

Not a good situation for Apple, but it may be some time before the case concludes and Apple has to pay up.

Lawyer: India rape verdict to be given Aug. 5

NEW DELHI (AP) ? An Indian juvenile court has delayed delivering its verdict until Aug. 5 in the fatal gang rape of a young woman on a New Delhi bus, a defense lawyer said Thursday.

The court had earlier said it would deliver its verdict Thursday. The verdict would have been the first handed down in the rape case, which led to furious street protests in India and sparked major reforms to the nation?s antiquated sexual assault laws.

    Pic: AP.

Defense lawyer Rajesh Tiwari told a throng of reporters outside the court that the verdict was delayed because of a Supreme Court case seeking to change the legal definition of a juvenile.

The defendant was 17 at the time of the attack last December and is being tried as a minor on charges including murder and rape. He faces a maximum sentence of three years at a reform center. Court rules forbid the publication of his name even though he has since turned 18.

The defendant was one of six people accused of tricking a young woman and her male companion into boarding an off-duty bus Dec. 16. Police say the men then raped and brutalized the woman and savagely beat the man before dumping them naked on the roadside. The woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

Four of the other defendants are being tried in a special fast-track court in New Delhi and face the death penalty. The sixth accused was found dead in his jail cell in March.

    Brother MFC-J4710DW

As the high-end printer (for now, at least) in Brother's Business Smart series, the Brother MFC-J4710DW offers everything you'll find in the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J4610DW and more. That translates to starting with the same 400-sheet capacity for letter-size paper and a manual feed for up to tabloid size (11 by 17 inches), among other features, and then adding a larger touch screen, duplex scanning, and the ability to load up to 250 sheets of tabloid-size paper in one of its trays. The combination makes it an easy pick as Editors' Choice for micro and small offices.

What all of the models in the Business Smart multifunction printer (MFP) series have in common is that they can print on tabloid-size paper fed through a manual-feed slot. For most of the models, the manual feed is the only choice for larger than letter-size size printing, limiting how much you can print at tabloid size (or legal size, for that matter) without it turning into an annoying chore.

The ability to put tabloid-size paper in one of the MFC-J4710DW's two drawers eliminates that issue. It also turns the printer into a true tabloid-size MFP, in much the same class as the Brother MFC-J6510DW and the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J6710DW. Compared with those printers, however, it also has the advantage of being a lot smaller. Set the drawer for tabloid-size paper, and it sticks out from the printer, adding 14.9 inches to its depth. Collapse the drawer for letter-size paper, however, and the printer is just 10.0 by 18.9 by 11.4 inches (HWD).

    Basics
If you ignore the large-size tray, the MFC-J4710DW is virtually identical to the Brother MFC-J4610DW in most other ways. It can print and fax from, as well as scan to, a computer, including over a network; it can work as a standalone copier and fax machine; it can print directly from a PictBridge camera; and it can print from and scan to a memory card or USB memory key. It will also let you preview files on a memory card or USB key before printing, using a 3.7-inch color touch screen rather the 1.8-inch screen on its less expensive near twin.

The two printers also share the same mobile printing features, including printing through the cloud, printing from a smartphone or tablet over a Wi-Fi connection, and offering Wi-Fi Direct, so you can connect to a mobile device even if the printer isn't on a network with an access point. Web-connected features let you print from and scan to an assortment of online services, including Evernote, Dropbox, and Facebook.

To say that the paper handling for printing is a strong point, is an understatement. In addition to the 400-sheet capacity, with a 150-sheet drawer for letter-size paper, and a 250-sheet drawer for paper up to tabloid size, it includes a built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of a page) and the manual feed slot in the back that I've already mentioned.

The paper drawers go into the printer with the long side of letter-size paper parallel to the front, so it comes out with the long side first. Given that design, it's not much of a leap to also let you feed tabloid-size paper through the manual feed slot with the 11-inch side as the leading edge, or to extend the one paper drawer, making it big enough to hold tabloid size paper, with the 11-inch side as the leading edge going into the printer.

For scanning, the MFC-J4710DW offers both a letter-size flatbed and a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF). As with most office-oriented MFPs, the ADF lets you scan up to legal-size pages. More important, however, is that unlike the scanners on most inexpensive MFPs, the MFC-J4710DW scanner can scan in duplex, which means scanning both sides of a page simultaneously.

If you deal with duplex documents very often, the duplex scanning is a key feature. Most inexpensive MFPs that can scan duplex pages use duplexing ADFs, not duplexing scanners. The difference is that a duplexing ADF has to scan one side, turn the page over, and scan the other, which takes a lot longer than scanning both sides at once. That's faster than doing it manually, but it's no match for actually scanning in duplex.

As you would expect, the combination of being able to both scan and print in duplex also lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies. You can also scan in either simplex (one side only) or duplex for faxing and copying.

    Setup, Speed and Output Quality
Setting up the MFC-J4710DW is standard. I connected it to a wired network for my tests, and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system.

Print speed is a strong point. On our business applications suite, I timed it (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 5.7 pages per minute (ppm). That counts as a tie with the Brother MFC-J4610DW, at 5.6 ppm, and is significantly faster than the other Business Smart printers we've tested. It's also faster than the MFC-J6510DW and MFC-J6710DW, which both came in at 4.1 ppm. Photo speed is also fast, at 57 seconds for a 4 by 6.

    Brother MFC-J4710DW

Output quality for the MFC-J4710DW is a little uneven, with relatively better text than either graphics or photos compared with other inkjet MFPs. Text quality was near the high end of the range for inkjet MFPs, making it easily good enough for most business use. Graphics were a touch below par, making them good enough for any internal business need. Whether you'll consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or the like will depend on how much of a perfectionist you are. Photos were roughly a match for the low end of what you would expect from drugstore prints.

One issue I ran into that demands mention is that the printer repeatedly jammed with the Brother BP71 photo paper that Brother recommends using. It didn't jam with the lighter weight Brother BP61 photo paper, however, which is the paper Brother provided for testing with the other printers in the Business Smart series.

Given that printing photos on photo paper is not an important application for a printer meant for office use, this doesn't count as a serious problem. However, if you want to print on photo paper, be aware that the recommended paper may not feed reliably, although Brother said it was unable to replicate the jamming that I saw. The problem is unfortunate, because the BP71 paper offers better color quality for photos than the BP61 paper, raising the quality from the low end of what you'd expect from drugstore prints to at least the mid-range of that category.

The MFC-J4710DW delivers a lot to like otherwise. It stands out in particular for its duplexing scanner and 400-sheet capacity, including the drawer for up to tabloid-size paper. It also gets lots of points for its speed, high-quality text, and its long list of MFP functions. If you're looking for an MFP with lots of office-oriented features plus tabloid-size printing, and particularly if you need to scan, copy, or fax duplex documents on regular basis, the Brother MFC-J4710DW will be hard to beat at anything like the price. That's more than enough to make it Editors' Choice.
