Egypt's Copts to return to Sinai homes, says government

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's presidency and prime minister said on Saturday security forces in North Sinai were working to return Coptic Christians living near Egypt's border with Israel to their homes after they fled in fear of attack from Islamist militants.

Nine Christian families living in Rafah near Egypt's border with Israel left their homes on Friday after Islamist militants made death threats and gunmen attacked a Coptic-owned shop.

Analysts say Islamists with possible al Qaeda links have gained a foothold in Sinai and the departure of the families could fuel concerns about religious tolerance and the rise of militancy after the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.

"The Coptic families quit their homes pre-emptively but the governor of North Sinai has given orders to return them to their homes and this is being carried out now," said Yasser Ali, presidential spokesman.

Two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on a Coptic-owned shop in Rafah on Wednesday but no one was injured.

Prime Minister Hisham Qandil said militants had not tried to force the Coptic families from the border town and they had left of their own accord. However, death threats against the Copts had been printed on flyers circulating in the desert area.

"We must uproot fear and provide all security measures to every citizen," Qandil said.

Israel has voiced concern about security in Sinai, where at least four cross-border attacks have taken place since Mubarak was toppled in February 2011.

Egypt's new president, Mohamed Mursi, has vowed to restore order. But efforts to impose central authority are complicated by the indigenous Bedouin population's ingrained hostility to the government in Cairo. (Writing by Marwa Awad; Editing by Sophie Hares)

Kenya troops fight on beaches in assault on Somali rebel city

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Kenyan troops launched a pre-dawn attack on the Somali port city of Kismayu on Friday in an assault to drive the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants from their last major stronghold.

Residents said they could still hear shelling coming from the beach just outside Kismayu but that no Kenyan forces could be seen in the city centre where some imams called on their followers to join al Shabaab on the frontlines.

The loss of the southern port would deal a huge blow to al Shabaab as it is a lucrative source of revenue and a centre for operations over areas it has controlled in south-central Somalia since 2007.

The group, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.

While Kismayu's recapture would go a long way towards stabilizing Somalia, which has been largely lawless for the past 20 years, it may embolden the militants to retreat to the hinterlands and resort to more guerrilla-style attacks.

Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said Kenyan soldiers and Somali government troops had advanced on Kismayu from the north, south and from the sea.

"We're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," Oguna told Reuters.

Residents reported fighting near the beach earlier on Friday, about 4 km (2.5 miles) outside the city, as military helicopters hovered overhead.

Locals said businesses were closed and many streets were deserted. Some masked men looked on from windows and balconies.

"We can hear deafening shells and the town looks dead. We don't know where to go, the jets are now flying over," said Rukia Jelle, who was watching the scene outside her home with her five children.

Al Shabaab, which counts foreign al Qaeda-trained fighters among its ranks, is seen as one of the biggest threats to stability in the east and Horn of Africa. It has received advice from al Qaeda's leadership, counter-terrorism experts say.

The group flourished in south-central Somalia in the wake of an unpopular Ethiopian incursion in late 2006 to rout another Islamist administration, installing order and endearing itself to large pockets of the population.

But their draconian measures, including amputations and beheadings, as well as the decision to block international aid during the famine last summer, cost them support.

Western nations have for years poured money into stabilizing Somalia, unnerved by a rising tide of Islamic militancy.

Those efforts seem to have paid dividends in the past year.

An internationally-funded peacekeeping force has driven the militants out of key urban strongholds, an EU naval force is clamping down on piracy, and a new president was elected in a largely corrupt-free process earlier this month.

There have also been targeted drone strikes against senior militant commanders. Kenya deployed troops inside Somalia last October, blaming the militants for attacks on Kenyan soil.

KISMAYU "NOT A PIECE OF CAKE"

The Kenyan military spokesman predicted an easy takeover.

"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance," he said.

Al Shabaab, however, said it would not surrender Kismayu.

"Going into Kismayu is not a piece of cake. For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday.

Abdirashid Hashi, an analyst with the International Crisis Group said the loss of Kisamyu would be a "huge psychological blow" and a "significant loss" for the militants.

"The die-hard members will continue with their destabilization strategy of targeted killings, suicide bombings and IEDs (roadside bombs)," Hashi told Reuters.

"The low-level footsoldiers will just see them as a losing proposition," he said.

Hashi also said the loss of funding from local taxes would hurt them less as the group morphed into a more fluid guerrilla force.

Al Shabaab's radio station, Radio Andalus, was still airing live in Kismayu, urging residents to take their guns and join the 'jihad', Ismail Suglow, a Kismayu resident, said.

Yunis Osman, who attended Friday prayers at Kismayu's Dabaqeyn mosque, said the preacher urged people to join al Shabaab.

"The imam said mujahideen and civilians should go to the frontlines near the beach to fight. Many nodded their heads in affirmation," he said.

A woman named Halima said some residents who support the militants had already joined them with guns at the frontline.

Hashi said the fighters, who have been in Kismayu for the last five years, would have prepared for an assault they knew was coming after African troops seized Mogadishu, Afmadow, Baidoa, Beledweyne, and Marka.

"I am sure they have some contingency plans and have sent supplies outside the city," he said.

The fallout from Kismayu's eventual capture is far from clear. The city is home to rival clans who will be jockeying for power, especially over control of the port due to lucrative tax revenues.

The U.N. refugee agency said there had been a spike in residents fleeing the city on Thursday. More than 13,000 people have fled Kismayu since the beginning of September after Kenyan forces began targeting al Shabaab's positions in the city.

More can mean less leptin Alzheimer | Health & Fitness Articles at ...

J. Wesson Ashford, MD, Ph.D. A major goal will be to determine whether treatment with leptin reduced the levels of a protein called tau, which is elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer patients. Replacement therapy in leptin continued .High levels of the hormone leptin regulation of energy was associated with low rates of disease in a study published in TheJournal of the American Medical Association.

Leptin has been shown to reduce the levels of B-amyloid, the main constituent of the deposits, or plaques, that occur in the brain of people suffering from Alzheimer?s disease.

If our results are confirmed by others, leptin levels in older adults may serve as one of many possible biomarker for healthy aging and the brain, especially, may open new avenues in order to possible preventive and therapeutic interventions, write the researchers. Leptin replacement therapy

But Seshadri said it remains to be seen whether leptin replacement therapy would benefit humans with Alzheimer?s or help protect against disease.

He said the study reinforces the growing awareness that the health problems associated with procedures such as obesity and resistance increase the risk of dementia in old age.

Tau protein is a key that allows the transport along the fibers of the brain, he tells WebMD. If leptin decreases the levels of tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid, which tells us something is happening. So we only need 45 patients to demonstrate an effect.

Over 12 years of follow-up, those with lower levels of leptin were about four times more likely to develop Alzheimer?s than those with the highest levels.

Ashford is with the Center Stanford / VA Aging Clinical Research, Stanford, California

The treatment with leptin has been shown in studies on animals recent to improve the performance of the memory, even after the onset of Alzheimer?s disease, such as dementia.

Discovered in the mid-1990, leptin is produced by fat cells and is considered critical for the regulation and. But there is evidence suggesting a role more and more of the hormone in brain development and memory.

Higher concentrations at the beginning of leptin were associated with lower rates of dementia years later. This association was observed even after adjusting for the impact of quarantine abdominal or belly fat, which was recently identified as a risk factor for Alzheimer?s disease early.

The study initially included 785 elderly participants in the Framingham Heart Study in progress, which began enrolling patients in 1948.

The National Institutes of Health recently awarded nearly $ 3 million for a small pilot study of leptin replacement therapy in patients with Alzheimer?s disease.

?Our skeleton with its bones, joints and muscle connections serves us so well in our daily lives that we hardly pay attention to this great system,? said Dr. Elazar Zelzer Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute. ?While previous research has uncovered the mechanisms that contribute to the development and growth of each component of this complex organ and wonderfully adaptable, specific interactions between bones, muscles and tendons that drive the entire musculoskeletal system are not fully understood.

Our study raises a strong possibility that leptin may actually play a role in various pathological processes that cause Alzheimer?s disease clinic, the researcher Sudha Seshadri, MD, of Boston University School of Medicine, tells WebMD. The measurement of levels of leptin

If confirmed, the researchers say the findings could have important implications in the search for effective therapies to prevent and treat disease.

China seals Bo's fate ahead of November 8 leadership congress

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's ruling Communist Party accused disgraced politician Bo Xilai of abusing power, taking huge bribes and other crimes on Friday, sealing the fate of a controversial leader whose fall shook a leadership handover due at a congress from November 8.

The once high-flying Bo now faces a criminal investigation that stemmed from a murder scandal, and will almost certainly be jailed. With the Communist Party congress about six weeks away, further steps in the case could come before then, helping pave the way for a transition of power, experts said.

"Bo Xilai's actions created grave repercussions and did massive harm to the reputation of the party and state, producing an extremely malign effect at home and abroad," the official statement from a party leaders' meeting said, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency.

Bo's wife Gu Kailai and his former police chief Wang Lijun have already been jailed over the scandal stemming from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, where Bo was Communist Party chief.

The official statement carried by Xinhua said that in the murder scandal, Bo "abused his powers of office, committed serious errors and bears a major responsibility".

That charge appears to reflect accusations from Wang's trial that suggested Bo tried to stymie the murder investigation.

Reports that Bo, the "princeling" son of a revolutionary leader, could escape with a light punishment have now been dealt a fatal blow, and accusations of womanizing could further tarnish his reputation in the eyes of Chinese people.

But the few weeks left before the congress will probably not allow time for a trial, said He Weifang, a law professor at Peking University who has closely followed Bo's downfall.

"I think it's quite certain that he won't be able to escape punishment under the criminal law, but the timing makes it unlikely that will happen before the congress," said He.

"I'd guess that he'll get a jail sentence of 20 years or longer. The death penalty is unlikely, although the bribery charges could in theory allow it, if the amount is as huge as they say."

At the congress, Chinese President Hu Jintao will step down as party chief, almost certainly making way for Vice President Xi Jinping to emerge as top leader. Xi is then almost sure to be appointed state president at the annual parliament session, likely in March next year.

WARNING TO HEED EXAMPLE

Bo, 63, has been expelled from the party as well as the elite decision-making Politburo and Central Committee "in view of his errors and culpability in the Wang Lijun incident and the intentional homicide case involving Bogu Kailai", said the party announcement.

Bogu is his wife's official but rarely used surname.

Bo's "grave violations of party discipline" extended back to his time as an official in Dalian city and Liaoning province in northeast China, and as minister of commerce, said the statement from the Politburo.

"Party organizations at all levels must use the case of Bo Xilai's grave disciplinary violations as a negative example," it said.

Bo's son, Bo Guagua, who was a friend of the murdered Heywood, has remained largely silent throughout the fall of his parents. He appears to be still in the United States, after finishing graduate studies at Harvard University.

Since Bo Xilai was ousted in March, he has not been seen in public and has not been allowed to answer the accusations against him. At a news conference days before his removal, Bo rejected as "filth" and "nonsense" the then unspecified allegations against him and his family.

At the same time as announcing the slate of accusations against Bo, the party set the November 8 date for the congress that will unveil the country's new central leadership line-up. Eight is considered a lucky number in China.

The twin announcements will "significantly reduce perceived political and economic risks" and "help end policy paralysis," Ting Lu, China economist Bank of America/Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong said in an emailed research note.

"If anything, this should make markets and the general public somewhat assured that this is not really being delayed too far," Damien Ma, an analyst for the Eurasia Group who follows Chinese politics, said of the November 8 congress date.

LEFTIST SYMPATHISERS CRY FOUL

Bo, 63, was widely seen as pursuing a powerful spot in the new political line-up before his career unraveled after his former police chief, Wang Lijun, fled to a U.S. consulate for more than 24 hours in February and alleged that Bo's wife Gu had poisoned Heywood to death.

After his appointment as party chief of Chongqing in 2007, Bo, a former commerce minister, turned it into a showcase of revolution-inspired "red" culture and his policies for egalitarian, state-led growth. He also won national attention with a crackdown on organized crime.

His brash self-promotion irked some leaders. But his populist ways and crime clean-up were welcomed by many of Chongqing's 30 million residents, as well as others who hoped that Bo could take his leftist-shaded policies nationwide.

His likely trial could still stir that ideological contention. China's party-run courts rarely find in favor of defendants, especially in politically-sensitive cases.

After state television announced the charges against Bo, some leftist sympathizers insisted that he was the innocent victim of a political plot.

"I just still don't believe that Bo has so many problems with corruption," Han Deqiang, a leftist Beijing academic who has supported Bo, told Reuters. "We have to wait and see what else comes out. But I don't think we've been given the truth."

In March, Bo was sacked as Chongqing party boss, and in April he was suspended from the party's Politburo, a powerful decision-making council with two dozen active members.

The latest party statement also said Bo "had or maintained improper sexual relations with multiple women". It added that the investigation discovered clues of other, unspecified crimes.

"We'll have to wait and see what charges are accepted by the prosecutors in any indictment," said Li Zhuang, a Beijing lawyer who was jailed by Bo after raising allegations that Chongqing's anti-crime gang policies involved torture and other unchecked abuses. "The charges could change."

Increase Your Brand Presence With These Social Media Marketing ...

Social media marketing is one of the most effective methods of online advertising. However, not everyone is confident in their ability to design an effective campaign; they require additional information on the target market or budgeting. Keep reading to develop better marketing skills.

Demographics are a key factor in determining the success or failure of social media marketing. Research them thoroughly. If you are able to determine that one specific page or advertisement is particularly appealing to a certain group, you can use that information for future campaigns.

Be flexible when it comes to keeping your page updated. Create excitement by updating the content of your social media sites more often when launching new products or services. If you are having a hard time coming up with new content, slow down and take the time to write quality articles.

TIP! Host an online Q-and-A about your products or services. Allowing visitors to pose questions and get answers can generate new interest and renew excitement.

Social Media Marketing

In order to begin successfully with social media marketing so that you can discover your own voice, you just have to fake this voice until you?re successful. Learn how your competition uses social media marketing, and use their tactics for inspiration until you learn the ropes and find your own ways to interact with customers. Study their profiles on social networks, as well as their content and promotions.

If your business is of a home-based nature, don?t use autoresponders or bots to post to your social media pages. Unless you put forth the effort to accurately represent yourself on a social networking site, you run the risk of alienating or angering customers. Such messages often look like spam to fans and followers, and they will be ignored, or even worse, cause them to drop your site.

TIP! If you do not have the luxury of a formatting guru on your team, you may find it easier to post articles and notes in the form of a numbered list. This will allow you to easily and effectively present your information.

You want to make subscribing to your blog as simple as possible. Make the subscribe button as visible as possible. Ideally, it should be positioned in a prominent location. Some people have slow Internet, so make your button load first.

Give away something if you want to increase your level of following. To do this, you would want to require that a user has to enter their email or like your content, etc, in order to enter into the contest. You?d be surprised how many people do this. People will most likely be interested in your business or site when you do something like this.

Update your blog entries on a frequent basis. Try to schedule your social media posts on a regular interval. This will entice readers to come back to your site more often to check for updates. Set a reminder so you will know it?s time for a new blog entry.

TIP! Observe what works for your competition. Discover what is helping their success and what is not working.

If you?re using a social media marketing strategy that has you posting on public message boards, it?s crucial that you stay on good terms with the board?s users. The users are the potential buyers of your product or service, and all your comments should be free of hard-sell tactics and aimed at supplying useful and honest information. Good relationships will encourage people to find out more about your business, so always try to post useful information.

Think about having contests or sweepstakes on Facebook. Every consumer loves the thought of winning something for nothing. If you run a contest, you can build enthusiasm for your site and brand. Sales will also be encouraged as your products are highlighted in an informal way.

Social Media

TIP! You can hide a coupon code in a YouTube video thanks to the annotation feature. By waiting until later in the video, or even the end, viewers must watch it all before receiving the code.

Inform your customers that you are utilizing social media. When your existing customers follow you on most social media websites, all of their followers will know about it. This will provide you with a fairly easy source of advertisement. At the end of the day, it?s all about keeping what you have while continuing to grow.

If you upload video to YouTube, take advantage of the description field. Include links to your website, and an option to share the video on the most popular social networking sites. If you can convince YouTube viewers to follow you within Facebook or Twitter, the chances of them sharing your videos with others is higher.

This article should?ve helped you with incorporating better business practices using social media marketing. Social media marketing will lead to an increase in the online visibility of your business. This will widen your reputation and increase your sales and

U.S. aims to rally Syrian opposition with new aid

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Obama administration moved Friday to rally Syria's opposition with pledges of $45 million in new non-lethal and humanitarian assistance as the administration and other world leaders lamented the failure of diplomatic efforts to push Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. would contribute an additional $15 million in non-lethal gear ? mostly communications equipment ? to the civilian opposition trying to oust Assad as well as $30 million in new humanitarian assistance to help those affected by the continuing violence.

She also delivered a new, stark warning to Iran that it must stop arming and supporting the Assad regime.

"It is no secret that our attempts to move forward at the U.N. Security Council have been blocked repeatedly, but the United States is not waiting," Clinton said as she announced the new aid at a gathering of the Friends of Syria group that she hosted at a New York hotel on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. She and other foreign ministers from the group met with nine Syrian opposition figures, including several who traveled from Syria to attend Friday's session, to discuss strategy.

With U.N. action blocked by Russia and China, Clinton said the rest of the world must support the Syrian opposition. She also said it was urgent that the fractured foes of the regime unite around plans for a political transition that could put an end to more than three decades of Assad family rule. Activists say the current 18-month long conflict has led to more than 30,000 deaths.

"Conditions in Syria continue to deteriorate as the Assad regime relentlessly wages war on its own people," Clinton said. "We see more bodies filling hospitals and morgues and we see more refugees fleeing their homeland and flooding into neighboring countries. The regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin."

In Washington, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said new intelligence suggested the Syrian government has moved some of its chemical weapons in order to protect them, even though the U.S. believes that the main sites remain secure.

The new U.S. humanitarian assistance ? which brings America's total humanitarian contribution to more than $130 million since the crisis began ? will include food, water, blankets and medical services to victims of the violence. U.S. officials said on Thursday that an earlier shipment of medical goods provided by USAID had just arrived in southern Syria. The officials would not provide details of how the aid made it into Syrian territory.

The additional non-lethal support brings the total U.S. contribution in that area to nearly $40 million since the crisis began and includes 1,100 sets of communications equipment, including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras and training for more than 1,000 activists, students and independent journalists.

"We are working to help them strengthen their networks, avoid regime persecution and document human rights abuses," Clinton said. The U.S. is not providing military aid to the rebels although it acknowledges that other countries are.

Clinton's announcement came as fighting intensified in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, with the most widespread battles reported in three months in the city of 3 million people as rebel forces launched a new offensive against Assad.

Despite some battleground success, there have been complaints that the opposition is hopelessly splintered and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer. Friday's meeting was intended in part to encourage better cooperation among Assad's foes.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," Clinton said. U.S. officials have noted that revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour were becoming increasingly organized.

Members of local groups from across Syria and representatives of the exile group, the Syrian National Council ? including its head, Abdulbaset Sieda ? attended the meeting. But U.S. officials declined to name others taking part or let them be photographed, saying that doing so would risk putting those opponents of Assad in danger of reprisals.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Arab League. League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby lamented the U.N.'s inability to demand that the Geneva plan be implemented by threatening sanctions against those who would not abide by it.

"All of our efforts up to now have led to failures," he said. "We have not managed to change the situation."

Neither Russia nor China, which have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, were invited to Friday's meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ? who was to address the General Assembly on Friday ? has accused the U.S. and other countries of encouraging terrorism in their stance on Syria.

However, Clinton told the meeting that the greatest threat to Syria, other than the Assad regime itself was Iran.

"Let's be very frank here," she said. "The regime's most important lifeline is Iran."

"There is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus. Iran will do everything it can to evade international sanctions," Clinton said. She urged Syria's neighbors to take extra steps to ensure that Iran is not smuggling weapons and materiel into Syria through their airspace or territory.

Police: 2 dead, 4 wounded in Minn. office shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A shooter opened fire Thursday at a Minneapolis sign business, leaving at least two people dead and four others wounded, including three critically, police and hospital officials said.

The shooting at Accent Signage Systems, in a largely residential area of the city, resulted in "a couple of fatalities" and at least four people being taken to hospitals, Minneapolis police spokesman Steve McCarty said.

Hennepin County Medical Center was treating three people from the scene, all in critical condition, spokeswoman Christine Hill said. She said the hospital wasn't expecting more patients with critical injuries.

Officers wouldn't release details about the shooter, including if he or she were among the victims. By Thursday evening, officers were slowly walking around the scene without their weapons drawn and interviewing neighbors.

Dozens of squad cars and police vehicles still surrounded the business, in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood on the city's north side. Traffic was stopped on a nearby bridge along Penn Avenue, where earlier in the day law enforcement officers had rifles drawn and pointed at a park below.

People from the neighborhood milled around but deputies kept them back.

Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building down the street having his picture taken when he and his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.

"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off running to our vehicles."

Accent Signage Systems' website says the company makes interior signage and listed its founder as Reuven Rahamim. A phone message left at the business and at a residential listing for Rahamim was not immediately returned.

"Very sad situation in Bryn Mawr," Mayor R.T. Rybak tweeted Thursday afternoon. "Please stay away and let the police do their work."

Hennepin County sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Kiava said earlier that deputies had been called to the shooting, though she didn't have further information.

PFT: Kyle Shanahan fined 25K for berating refs

Bill BelichickAP

The NFL has a bright-line rule when it comes to its officials:? No touchy.

Thus, despite whatever explanation anyone can muster when touching an official, touching an official always results in punishment.

So it?s no surprise that, as reported by Steve Wyche of NFL Network, the NFL will fine Patriots coach Bill Belichick for (wait for it) touching an official.

Belichick grabbed the arm of one of the various officials who were giving him the cold shoulder after a final-play field goal gave the Ravens a win over the Patriots.? Belichick wanted someone to explain why the play wasn?t being reviewed by replay.

?I?m trying to get an explanation for obviously an important call, play, in that game,? Belichick said Monday.? ?That?s the number one thing between coaches and officials.? It?s always at the forefront.? It?s just communication of what?s going on, of what?s happening.?

Still, no touchy.

In 2009, receiver Brandon Stokley was ejected from a game and fined $25,000 for making unintended contact with an official while disputing a call.? That same season, Raiders tight end Tony Stewart was fined $25,000 for the same infraction.

And way back in 1995 (as we mentioned on Monday), former Steelers coach Bill Cowher was fined for stuffing a photo of a play on which the Steelers didn?t have 12 men on the field into the pocket of the referee.

So Belichick, in all fairness, will be fined at least $25,000.? Given the multiple warnings regarding treatment of the replacement officials and the fact that fines for verbal abuse have been in the range of $25,000 to $30,000, the fine for physical contact could be higher.

Some have suggested Belichick could be or should be suspended.? But if he wasn?t suspended for Spygate, he won?t be suspended for grabbing an official?s arm.

Still, discipline is warranted.? All he had to do was follow the officials into the tunnel and ask to speak to the referee.? Since it was the last play of the game, a replay was still possible; indeed, the referee in last year?s Raiders-Bills game reviewed a last-play Hail Mary after the game had ended ? unbeknownst to everyone at the time.? Belichick should have gone through the proper channels and tried to lobby for another look at the field goal.

That said, the field goal looked to be good.? More importantly, because the ball was over the upright, the call on the field couldn?t have been overturned.

Barnes & Noble's Nook HD 7-inch Android tablet, hands-on (video)

Image

It was roughly this time last year that Amazon's Kindle Fire showed us just how successful an aggressively priced 7-inch tablet could be, becoming, arguably the go-to gift of the last holiday season. This summer, Google upped the ante, showing the world that a $200 tablet could be more than just an OEM-ed content delivery device, enlisting ASUS to design a really solid piece of hardware at a seemingly impossible price.

Barnes & Noble's journey in the space, meanwhile, has been decidedly more convoluted. In mid-October of 2010, the company gave the world the Nook Color -- a product with a wildly original industrial design, but decidedly limited functionality, which was, for most intents and purposes, an LCD-based color e-reader. Halfway through the following year, the device got a Pinocchio-like upgrade, transforming it into an honest-to-goodness tablet, apps and all. The device's celebration was cut short, however, eclipsed entirely by the arrival of the aesthetically (nearly) identical, but internally superior Nook Tablet.

When Amazon announced the release of the Kindle Fire HD and all of its many variants, there was little question that Barnes & Noble had something waiting in the wings as well. After all, much of the bookseller's hardware game plan seems to revolve around going toe-to-toe against Amazon offerings, and since the company beat its chief competition to the market with a glowing reader, a Nook Tablet seemed all but inevitable. With this week's announcements, however, the company has managed to offer up some surprises -- for starters, there's the fact that it's doubled its efforts with the release of two tablets -- with the 7-inch Nook HD and the 9-inch Nook HD+. Then there's the fact that the company has clearly put great effort into the hardware this go-round, rather than offering up yet another rehash of the Color / Tablet lineage. Let's start with the Nook HD, shall we? Join us after the break.

TransPhone smartphone / tablet hybrid gets official, doesn't quite topple ASUS PadFone

TransPhone yet another smartphonetablet combo

It looks like CMIT's TransPhone smartphone-tablet combo has finally made it to stores after its debut in May of last year. A competitor to the ASUS PadFone, the TransPhone fits inside a 7-inch display dubbed the TransPad, and runs Android 2.3.5. The TransPhone has a 3.5-inch screen, a Snapdragon S1 processor, 512MB RAM and ROM, 512MB internal memory plus a 32GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera, and more. As for price, a TransPhone plus TransPad combo is $429.99 while individual TransPads are $140 each and a solo TransPhone is $379. You can even go hog wild and get a Family Pack for $999 or a Business Pack for $4499. Seeing as the ASUS PadFone adds a keyboard to the mix, and that there's a PadFone 2 coming up soon, we have a feeling the TransPhone won't be much of a threat to ASUS.

EE is a true deliver draw close to learning and is easy to implement; it may be used in any theme area at any rank level.

This month?s?journal?prompt if you are following along is to have your child write a letter to themselves as adults at a particular age (either you select the age or have your child choose an age.) They can include anything they want such as a funny story, things they currently like to do,hopes or dreams of what they will be like at that particular age.

The letter doesn?t need to be more than a page long and great idea would be to keep the letter or do as we do and write one each year. We choose an age that is 20 years older than the children?s current ages and include a snapshot of each child at their current ages on the letters. ?I take and add them to each notebook so that I can give them to each of the children when they reach the age that first started with.

Later once they are adults these letters will be great birthday presents filled with memories, hopes, and dreams of the past. The letters also allow your children a chance to see how their writing skills and styles change with each year. I don?t have them read these aloud as we do other journal entries because these tend to be more personal.

Geisha to Go?.

Madama Butterfly is an acclaimed masterpiece. I just revisited it, via the Ponnelle opera movie starring Mirella Freni. I finished it with a mix of delight, awe, and rage. What exquisite performances, what a horrid story! The word ?Diva? gets thrown around a lot, and tends to evoke images of spoiled performers trashing hotel rooms. The term refers back to goddesses, female singers who arouse a connection to the divine within us as we watch and listen. Mirella Freni is a diva. So is Christa Ludwig. Freni sings with a palette of delicate colors, opening out to a full-throated forte when necessary. Her acting is calibrated to the finest detail and her ability to believe in what she is doing ? coupled with her petite and winsome beauty ? create an enthralling character. Ludwig combines two almost contradictory skills, magnetic attraction of focus and the ability to refract focus, to make the viewer follow her eyes to whatever she herself is focusing on. She sings well-nigh perfectly but Suzuki is mainly an acting assignment and she extracts every ounce of juice from her part. Together the two divas create a world of love and support with cross currents of mistress/servant and even mother/daughter relationships. The male side of the opera offers less loveable figures. Robert Kerns plays a Sharpless who knows what will happen but stays within his job description and isn?t comfortable interfering. The dead-end exhaustion of his job surfaces as he pulls out his flask for fortification: another out-of-place American doing foreign service under a volcano. Michel S?n?chal?s Goro is a fascinatingly hideous racist caricature, simpering through his buck teeth. Placido Domingo veers from engaging to hammy, allowing an older theatrical vocabulary ? more suggestive of the Duke of Mantua ? to flavor his American sailor cad. The Vienna Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan play the lushest Puccini imagineable, mostly at very expansive tempi. The range of dynamics and the wealth of detail more than balance the occasional moment of inertia. Jean-Pierre Ponnelle adds a fair amount of visual freedom to what is still essentially a stage production. Interior monologue lines are filmed as voice-overs. There are several effective daydream sequences. But the much-mentioned sea with its wide horizon never actually appears. There are several directorial missteps: how can Pinkerton sing of her first sight of his mother-in-law when she was so prominently featured few pages before? How can Butterfly shy away from revealing her sacred objects on the grounds that there are too many people around when she and Pinkerton are alone in an interior room? These problems vanish if the subtitles are off! Butterfly embraces her husband?s country and religion by dressing western style and redecorating ? but her idea of Christianity is filtered through a European Catholic lens. The devotional picture of Jesus she keeps on her sideboard does not suggest mainstream US culture from the age of Teddy Roosevelt! Ponnelle does not solve the riddle of how to stage an extremely sexy love duet and not have it look tame and stagey. The end of Act 1, a beautiful shot of Butterfly looking up at the stars as Pinkerton drifts sleepwards on her breast does not suggest that Trouble will be born nine months later. Madama Butterfly contains a huge and upsetting cultural conundrum. Two actually. Maybe even three. One is about cross cultural relationships, another about the relative roles of men and women, and a third could be a coded gay subtext. Our heroine loves at sight, gives herself so completely that she loses any sense of individuality apart from her role as wife, subordinates herself to a man?s identity, and acts as an avatar for hopeless unreturned love. In the first act we can adore her and worry about her. In the second we can feel pity and still root for her. But the final scene poses problems that require solutions far different from the one that the playwright (Belasco) has imposed on us. I know, I am using modern cultural awareness to judge the art of another time! But the idea that Butterfly must die rather than live with dishonor is bad enough ? the thought that she is required to give up her child rather than receive child support from the child?s father is unthinkable (to me!). Ponnelle makes the final scene a great deal more cruel than I think it needs to be, with Suzuki dutifully preparing Butterfly for her suicide (horrifying but still touching) and then Butterfly waiting to cut her throat until Pinkerton bursts in and she can imprint her death on him. Her suicide becomes an act of aggression, a punishment. Not at all the self-sacrifice that seems inherent in the story. I suddenly hated her. I understood her rage but it seemed inappropriate, pasted on, utterly unlike anything she had done, said, sung, or been for the previous two and half hours/three years of the opera and its story. What a pity that so much utterly gorgeous and moving music is wedded to a plot so limited by its cultural assumptions. It may record a way of living, but it isn?t a picture I want to wallow in.
