Can Freshwater Aquarium Fish Eat Vegetables? - All Natural Pet Care

Posted by Melody McKinnon on August 30th, 2012

Herbivorous and Omnivorous fish, shrimp, and aquatic snails often enjoy household vegetables in their diet. Some omnivores require more vegetation in their diet than others, such as Mollies, Rainbowfish and Apple Snails.? Freshwater fish that are primarily herbivorous, such as common Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus sp.) and Oto?s (Otocinclus sp.), should be fed a diet based almost entirely on vegetation.

Many fish-keepers like to provide whole vegetables to limit the amount of processed fish foods consumed.? Which vegetables are best for each species depends upon their digestive system as much as the nutrient content.? While tropical fish don?t digest terrestrial vegetables as well as they do seaweed and algae, they can digest some better than others.

Many vegetables also offer side benefits to fish, shrimp and snails, including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasite properties.? They can support the immune system and organ function, while also improving reproduction and growth.

7 Tips for Feeding Vegetables to Tropical Fish, Shrimp & Snails

  1. Buy organic and wash well
  2. Go for vegetables low in carbohydrates and avoid those high in starchy carbohydrates and/or sugar (potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, etc). High carbohydrate food may interfere with digestion or nutrient absorption and encourage parasite reproduction.
  3. Cook just enough to break down the tissue so fish can eat it.? Frozen and canned vegetables can usually be fed without cooking.
  4. Avoid feeding too much vegetation that is high in oxalate (such as spinach)
  5. Although fresh fish food is the best fish food, you can feed low-heat dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables for convenience.? We often feed gently dehydrated Vegetarian Bottom Bites natural fish food for an optimum combination of many vegetables, herbs and a bit of fruit.
  6. Balance is the key to any successful diet plan. Research your specific species and try to meet their nutrient requirements as naturally as possible.
  7. Vegetables can pollute your fish tank if you feed too many of them at once.? Since the nutrients aren?t compromised like they are in highly processed flake or pellet fish food, a little goes a long way.? Clean up any leftovers promptly.

Some Vegetables we feed to our Aquarium Fish, Shrimp & Snails include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli florets, cauliflower and bok choy)
  • Dark, leafy greens
  • Green peppers
  • Wild vegetables (dandelion greens, chicory, dock, etc)
  • ?Waste? greens -? Many vegetable greens that humans don?t eat can be put to good use in our aquarium fish tank. Radish tops, for example, are even more nutritious than the root humans love. Research to avoid foliage that isn?t safe, such as rhubarb leaves.

Apple promotes pair of execs to Senior VP level, Bob Mansfield to hang around after all

Bob Mansfield of AppleIt's a day of upheaval in the boardroom at Apple -- in the good sense. Remember how Hardware Engineering Senior VP Bob Mansfield said he would retire in June? He's had a change of heart and will keep working on future products. Meanwhile, two of the vice presidents who've been mainstays of Apple's recent plans, Mac Software Engineering VP Craig Federighi and Hardware Engineering VP Dan Riccio, have been promoted to Senior VP. All three will report directly to CEO Tim Cook, and both Federighi as well as Riccio will get their first turns at Apple's executive management team. While the shift isn't going to signal a dramatic change in strategy, it's notable that Riccio's role is expanding: he's moving from his earlier iPad focus to overseeing all the hardware Apple makes. We can only guess at what the ultimate goals might be for the new assignments, although we can imagine Apple jumping through hoops to keep a hardware executive as skilled as Mansfield on its side.

Change Management Gotcha's | Horizontal Change Management

A borrowed title from a post by Connie Moore of Forrester entitled: ?Gotcha?s for Change Management for Business Process Improvement?.

The Five gotcha?s- middle management, unions, talent management, change prioritization and tying downsizing to process improvement- from her post came from panelists:

Connie added the need for a communication plan as her own choice.

This is an interesting list.

Middle Management- always the scapegoat gotcha stakeholders. Loss of power was the primary reason stated for pushback from this group. Involving them is the suggested approach. OK simple change management. Would they be involved in reducing the power they are worried about? No worry about change is unfounded?

Unions- another great scapegoat. ?Change management gets harder in environments with unions?, from the article. Would that be because unions force transparency, collaboration and dialogue? (my question). ?I have seen process transformation and change work successfully in a union shop, but it required a closely aligned working relationship between business execs, the HR exec, and the CIO?, from the article. The change was going to work without that? (me again).

Talent Management- this one might make it on my list. The suggested approach of software based Six Sigma building makes me question its addition. I don?t know much about green belts and black belts as change agents, but on the surface it sounds like preparation for war?

Change Prioritization- this one is a good one too. ?Not sure if makes it to a gotcha list. Prioritize and reduce was the suggestion. Combine could be added. Most of the engagements I am on have potential for combining (and therefore reducing) at the same time. Beware though- ?reduce? is a synonym for ?eliminate?.

Keep process improvement separate from downsizing- process improvement should free up resources. If you do not have an outlet for that resource to fill- growth, another initiative, some new innovation- then you have too many resources. Wouldn?t that be downsizing? With change it is usually better to be honest than sneaky. Separating the two might play out as sneaky.

Connie added a communication plan. Again simple change management. ??communication, communication, communication? is the single most important part of change management?s success or failure.? from the article. If we are talking about the communication necessary to collaborate yes. ?Never too much communication? is an urban myth that refuses to die. You absolutely CAN over-communicate. Tons of something not so good does not make it any better (it just makes more not so good).

I picked on them a little.

It is a good list and certainly a good list to start dialogue. It is also a surprisingly mixed list (strategy, stakeholder connection, competency focus with a dash of culture) which gets big kudos.

Just make sure your own gotcha list pays attention to where change is going, who will be involved (and what skills are needed), how the structure of the organization will help or not and whether you really? have the resources necessary to get change to happen.

DREZEWIECKI: A fun, quality app for baseball fans

Friday, August 24, 2012 10:28 PM EDT

James Drzewiecki
Staff Writer

Buster Bash is an app available on apple devices and if you want a game that is similar to Angry Birds but with a baseball theme, well this would be it.

Now, let me say this ? this isn?t a perfect app. I did run into two issues that did make me like it less, but I?ll get into that later.

First, here is an overview of the game. You play as, well, your finger as you follow a boy named Buster in his baseball career. You start in his backyard in Leesburg, Georgia and as you progress you end up in the Big Leagues.

In each round you get 10 baseballs and the goal is to hit as many home runs as you can. As you hit balls you will earn sunflower seeds and these can be used to buy power-ups and equipment to help you hit those balls even farther.

The way you hit these balls is by swiping your finger across the screen, where my first annoyances with the game.

It could be just me but sometimes when I swipe my finger across the screen and clearly connect with a ball, the ball just goes right through my hit. It?s annoying and I could be wrong, I could be missing them, but I?m 97 percent sure I?m not.

The other is all the game?s fault. There comes a point in the game when the pitcher throws the ball and the ball bounces off the back of his head and falls. This will cause you to get 0 Feet. I can see if it happened once, but this happened at least seven times in a row.

Yet, when the game works it works great and it?s free to download and play. It?s not as smooth or fun as ?Angry Birds? but it takes a lot of hints from that game and tries to deliver something new and refreshing and for the most part it works.

One thing that I dislike about all these apps, not just Buster Bash, is paying real money to achieve in-game currency. I brought this up awhile ago in a column where I talked bout the new Tiger Woods game. In these games you can just dish out real money to unlock currency, in this case sunflower seeds, to buy new equipment. Yes, you can collect sunflower seeds in the game and choose not to buy it for real but why even give us the option? I hate this option because if you?re feeling lazy you will just buy the in-game currency and it cheapens the experience. I know some people like this option, but come on you have to admit that it does take away most of the challenge, because if you get in a tight spot you?re not going to worry because you can just buy your way out.

These options to buy-in game currency should be taken out. If the companies want to make money off these apps then charge for the app and later release level packs you can also charge us for.

Closing out this week I want to say that app?s are becoming more and more popular and there is some great ones out there. But I will say that mobile phones app can?t compete fully with Nintendo or Sony?s handhelds. Yet, I do believe that it?s headed that way.

In the future I would like to see phones being able to bring full handheld versions of sports games that are also available on Nintendo?s and Sony?s systems. But until then the smart phones are giving us a different type of gaming and that?s fine, it separates it from the others.

Private group to run Philly's Catholic high schools

By NBC News staff and wire services

Faced with high costs and low enrollment, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is relinquishing control of its Roman Catholic high schools and special education centers to a private foundation, church leaders said.

Archbishop Charles Chaput announced Tuesday that the?Faith in the Future Foundation, based in Philadelphia,?will oversee 17 secondary and four special education schools beginning Sept. 1.

The partnership creates a new independent Catholic school system that serves about 15,000 students on a $128 million budget.

The archdiocese also serves?about 49,000 elementary students and will not be affected by the new deal. Church officials said they hope the new partnership with the foundation, formed by local Catholic business leaders six?months ago, will reinvigorate Philadelphia?s 120-year-old educational system hit hard by budget cuts and decline in enrollment.

?Certainly, on the enrollment side and the cost side, our schools have been shrinking for years, and we have to find new ways to partner,? Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, who oversees education for the archdiocese,?told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Chaput said he hoped the partnership will lead to a sustainable model for local religious education. The lay group can "provide a level of creativity we wouldn't be able to achieve on our own, and a broader level of community participation," he said.

The foundation was established following an outpouring of support for four Catholic high schools that were targeted for shuttering in June. About $12 million?was?generated to keep the schools open, according to local media reports.

The original mission of the foundation, led by former Cigna Corp. chief executive H. Edward Hanway, was to strengthen all local Catholic high schools through fundraising and marketing. The Faith in the Future Foundation will not be paid during its five-year contract with the archdiocese, he said.

"The independence of the Catholic secondary system, with the schools of special education, was critical to our ability to more fully address the fundraising and enrollment needs of our schools," said Hanway in a statement. "With capacity available to educate an additional 15,000 students, we fully intend to grow."

The schools will still get religious and academic curricula from the archdiocese's Office of Catholic Education, but those administrators will now report to the foundation, Hanway said.

All Catholic high school teachers are union members and will remain employees of the archdiocese, according to church officials. Union contracts will not be affected under the new deal, according to the archdiocese.

NBA Live 13 footage leaks, shows basketballs are still full of air

PreAlpha footage of NBA Live 13 leaks, basketballs still full of air

Some leaked footage of NBA Live 13, claimed to be from a pre-alpha build, has appeared just as we started to doubt the sports game's existence. Aside from some wooden commentating, the above video from Operation Sports shows off 10 minutes of gameplay between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Kotaku followed up with EA, who did indeed confirm this as NBA Live 13 footage ? albeit early footage. A rep said the video "appears to be captured from a pre-alpha build months ago and is not an official EA Sports release. It does not represent a final build or feature set for NBA Live."

Alpha Range iOS game requires a pico projector and laser pointer, we go hands-on (video)

Image

Granted, a magical little smartphone is all the gadgetry most casual gaming fans require to get their fix, but when LaserVR's Travis Haagen popped by our informal meetup at Portland's Ground Kontrol to talk about Alpha Range, we couldn't help but be impressed by the project. The game has a classic Asteroids / Space Invaders feeling to it, but Alpha Range is more than just another bit of mobile nostalgia. For one thing, you're going to need a lot more than just your phone, including a projector (pico will do fine for your needs) and a tripod. You project the game field onto a the wall (in the case of Ground Kontrol, we taped up a few pieces of paper, which worked fine) and interact with objects using a laser point.

When your iOS device is facing the wall, its camera monitors the field, using computer vision algorithms to detect your laser shots in real time, finally discovering a novel use for laser points that doesn't involve annoying rock bands or cats. Hitting the circular enemies will cause them to vaporize or perform other functions like opening up a black hole, depending on their color. The game was pretty responsive and incredibly addictive -- in fact, we were a bit bummed when we finally had to put the laser point down. Such fun isn't cheap, however -- it'll run you $8 from iTunes, on top of the price of all the accessories involved it getting it off the ground. Still, it's nice to see an innovative take like this on a classic gaming scenario.

We've got a video of the Star Trek: The Next Generation-inspired game after the jump.

Pantech Flex teased for AT&T LTE, will be available in the 'coming months'Well, this is one of the more... creative ways to tease a forthcoming product. Pantech is ready to show off its latest AT&T LTE device, the Flex, but it's taking to its popular Dew Tour to do so. Pantech is quite scant on specific information and isn't providing photos yet, but it did mention that the new device will be available in the coming months. In the meantime, the Flex will be exhibited this weekend at the Pantech Beach Championships in Ocean City, MD. Check out the full press release after the break.

Wednesday, 15 August 2012 - Business Travel Show blog

All eyes were on the rail industry this week following two massive announcements, starting with a proposed 6.2% increase in rail fares and followed by the news that Virgin Trains has lost its West Coast main line operating contract, which it had held since 1997, after being outbid by FirstGroup. FirstGroup is the UK?s largest train operator and it is believed to have bid as much as ?7bn for the rail franchise.

The company, under the name First West Coast Limited, will take over the franchise from 9 December and is due to operate the service until 2026. The West Coast main line is a lucrative business proposition, having experienced a surge in passenger numbers from 13m to 31m in the last 15 years.

FirstGroup says it will introduce 11 new 125mph six-car electric trains on the Birmingham-to-Glasgow route and provide more direct services between destinations. It?s also promised to add a further 12,000 seats a day on West Coast routes from 2016.

But what does all this mean for the business traveller and business travel buyer? After all, Virgin Trains has done an excellent job of attracting and retaining business travel customers during its 15-year West Coast reign.

If FirstGroup keeps its promises and really does increase direct services and capacity, then this is only good news for the business traveller reducing both journey times and disruptions. And, as FirstGroup owns a substantial chunk of the UK rail network then maybe, just maybe, there will be an opportunity for business travel buyers to negotiate volume discounts for the first time, which may well help to offset those rather steep fare increases.

Of course, it?s very early days, but let?s hope that FirstGroup bears the business traveller in mind when rolling out its franchise strategy in a few months time.

David Chapple is event director of the Business Travel Show. Commuting to central London from the Home Counties each day, he?s a bit of an expert on rail travel. Challenge him on Twitter @btshowlondon.?

Curiosity Transmits First 360-Degree Panorama From Mars

redletterdave writes with this snippet from the IB Times: "Five days after NASA's Curiosity rover successfully landed on Mars, the one-ton robot sent another postcard back to Earth, this one a 360-degree doozy. Curiosity's first panorama, albeit black-and-white, gives Earthlings a great high-quality glimpse at the surface on Mars, specifically within the 96-mile Gale Crater."

Facing Financial Struggles? Consider a Lawsuit Loan | How ...

?

Also referred to as a ?settlement loan,? ?lawsuit cash advance,? ?lawsuit funding,? or ?lawsuit settlement loan,? a lawsuit loan is an advanced fee plaintiffs borrow from lenders during civil suits. Although plaintiffs can borrow lawsuit loans after a settlement, many borrow a loan prior to the settlement of a case due to the financial struggles that can build up while waiting for a settlement to be reached.

As time drags on for a settlement to be reached, plaintiffs have financial obligations they must attend to such as providing food and shelter to their family as well as making necessary payments such as mortgage and car payments. Also, waiting for a settlement can affect an individual?s ability to work, or plaintiffs may earn a small income or have medical expenses to pay. Despite if a plaintiff has a good shot at winning their case, they have responsibilities in caring for themselves as well as their family. The emotional burdens in dealing with the settlement and case at large can also build up and place heavy stress on individuals.

In addition, many choose a lawsuit loan because even if they lose the case, they don?t have to pay anything back. Rather, the lawsuit is used as collateral. In the instance that you do take out a loan, you should be aware of how long your case will last, only take what you need, avoid spending on unnecessary items or for personal use, and ask the lender about fees. Of course, find a reputable lawyer who will represent you and fight your case.

Although there are many instances in which individuals decide to take out a lawsuit loan, common reasons include having to pay heavy medical expenses and avoiding home foreclosure. Injured plaintiffs take out lawsuit loans due to the high costs of medical bills they must pay such as hospital bills, physical therapy and in-home care. Common reasons for needing medical care include car accidents and slip and falls. The high price of bills can lower a plaintiff?s chance of pursing a lawsuit, but with a lawsuit loan, they can fight their case and pay their medical bills. In regards to home foreclosures, individuals waiting for a settlement may find trouble in paying their home mortgage, in which they may run into debt. Debt can be costly financially speaking and can also cost you your home. To avoid foreclosure, you can take out a lawsuit loan and gain access to money fast.

Additionally, keep in mind that a lawsuit loan should be your absolute last option. You should pay the money that you can and only take out a lawsuit loan if you run out of options.

Aluminium Piping In Residential Plumbing

?

Due to changes in the market, and the increase of copper pipe prices, that many people have started looking for alternatives. Aluminium pipe is one of the substitutes that is being considered. Not only is it cheaper but it does not have the potential health risks that can be associated with copper. Some scientists believe that the cooper used in household plumbing can present some serious health problems if not looked into properly and it is suggested that those with copper plumbing over 20 years old should think about having it replaced. One way to avoid getting large amounts of copper in your water is to use a water filter, however this is only a temporary solution and you should consider replacing your copper pipes in the near future, especially if they are over 10 years old. A good alternative that is just starting to be used more commonly is aluminium pipe.

The problem stems from tiny bits of copper from the pipes getting into your drinking water, not only could large amounts of this cause copper poisoning but copper is also associated with Alzheimers disease, diabetes and heart disease. Copper can be processed by the body but it is unable to cope if it occurs in large amount.?

Copper has been used in plumbing since the early 1960s and is now almost the main metal of choice for residential plumbing. There are now many alternatives to this outdated copper systems that are much more cost efficient and more importantly healthier. Copper was first used as it was seen as a durable material that would last at least twenty years. However, varying levels of acidity mean that pipes can corrode quicker than this and get into the drinking water. This corrosion may also cause tiny holes in the copper piping to appear which mean other harmful substance may be able to get into your drinking water from outside.

A few metals contain nutrients and can be good for you in small quantities, however built up over time or in large amounts, metals such as copper and iron can become toxic and cause major health problems. We even consume copper in some of the food we eat, however this is organic and the body is used to processing this, the copper that comes from the piping and is ingested through your drinking water is inorganic and cannot be easily processed.Through ingesting large amount of inorganic copper, cognitive function can be negatively impacted and slowed by up to almost 3 times.

If you are now thinking of replacing your old pipes with aluminium pipe, now is a good time as not only can you get cleaner, healthier pipes but you can also scrap your old one as copper pipe prices are at an all time high.

Live streams come to Cablevision's Optimum App for the Kindle Fire

Live streams come to the Cablevision Optimum App for the Kindle Fire

The Optimum App for the Kindle Fire has served Cablevision customers in search of a second screen for some time now, but now it's more like its siblings on iOS, PC or Mac. What we mean is that now it can stream live and on demand content subscribed to via your Cablevision service. That's the good news, the catch is that you have to be connected to your home network for the live streams to work, but at least all the channels are available, rather than a subset like some providers. Of course if you aren't interested in watching video on the small screen, you can still use the aforementioned Kindle Fire app as a remote as well as to manage your DVR or discover new content while the action plays on the big screen for the rest of those in your home to enjoy.

Israel sees U.N. majority for Palestine status upgrade

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Palestinians' bid to upgrade their status at the United Nations would find majority support there but would not bring them closer to statehood and peace with Israel, Israel's U.N. envoy said on Sunday.

Citing stalled peacemaking and Israeli settlement-building on occupied West Bank land where they seek sovereign independence, the Palestinians said on Saturday they would renew a bid to win U.N. recognition as a state.

Ron Prosor, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, accused the Palestinians of trying to recapture international attention that has shifted to crises in Iran, Egypt and Syria.

"There is an attempt (by the Palestinians) to make unilateral moves in order to internationalize the conflict," Prosor told Israel Radio in a telephone interview.

"But beyond what are perhaps the feelings of frustration, it is important to remember that the path to peace really is through the negotiating table with Israel."

The Palestinians want to found a state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, which Israel captured in the 1967 war. Though Israel quit Gaza in 2005, it claims East Jerusalem as its capital - a move not recognized abroad - and says it would keep swathes of West Bank settlements under any peace deal. The United Nations deems the settlements illegal.

Full U.N. membership for Palestine would require approval by the Security Council, where Israel's ally, the United States, would likely wield its veto given its demand the Palestinians set up their state in agreement with the Jewish state.

So the Palestinians, in what they describe as an interim move, plan to ask the U.N. General Assembly next month to accord them non-member observer status, which would allow them to join a number of U.N. agencies and the International Criminal Court.

The Palestinians are currently a U.N. observer "entity" with no voting rights. A similar statehood upgrade drive last year proved short-lived amid financial sanctions and diplomatic counter-lobbying by Israel and the United States.

Prosor said the Palestinians have a "guaranteed majority" in the 193-member General Assembly - enough to bestow non-member observer status, which the envoy predicted would be used "to hurt us (Israel)" in various international forums.

Israel has accused Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of going to the United Nations to evade negotiations that would entail both territorial compromise and that he reassert control over Gaza, which he lost in a 2007 civil war to Hamas Islamists hostile to the Jewish state.

"In essence, Abu Mazen (Abbas) today has zero control in Gaza," Prosor said in separate remarks to Israel's Army Radio, adding that the Palestinians' U.N. campaign "will change nothing on the ground".

Palestinians have made a freeze on Israeli settlement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem a condition for returning to peace talks. Israel cites biblical and historical ties to the areas and says the settlement issue should be decided in negotiations.

How to defeat your enemies on the Internet

    8 hrs.

The Internet began as a pure place, free of malice and bad manners. Today, rudeness and horror abound.

From friends you know and people you've never met, abuse comes in many forms. Maybe it's a nasty comment on a Facebook photo. Maybe it's an insulting tweet. Maybe it's writing "U SMELL FUNNY" on your wall over and over and over again.

So what do you do if someone is being mean to you online? Cry? Sit there and take it? No. You survive. You prevail. Here's how to beat the bullies.

    Take threats seriously

Look, if someone threatens you with physical harm via the Internet, go to the police. No matter what. No exceptions.

But if things are less severe?...

    Take it offline

If your friend is being a jerk?on the Internet, try to hash it out off the Internet. As magical as it is, the Web just isn't a good way to express sincerity. Odds are, you two will misunderstand each other online and exacerbate your spat. Just bury the hatchet face to face.

    Tattle on them

It's easy to talk smack?online. And it's just as easy to whine to the authorities about it. There is shame in telling on people in kindergarten, or in the mafia. But not online. Snitching is just a tool in your belt, not a sign of weakness.

Twitter doesn't have a formal policy against being mean. But actual threats, privacy invasion, and spamming are all verboten???as are "abusive" tweets, which is a little nebulous. If you think you're being abused, not just in the midst of an argument, report the infringing messages here. If Twitter agrees with you, your antagonist will either be warned or suspended.

The same goes for Facebook: Every post can be reported directly to Zuckerberg's Internet police???and luckily for you, victim, Facebook is much stricter than Twitter. On paper, at least. The Book declares the following for its users:

You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user.

You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

It's extremely easy to report stuff you don't like. If Facebook doesn't like it either, the transgressor can have posts deleted or be suspended from the service.

Gmail, like email in general, is pretty much still the wild west. So unless you get a subject line stating, "I'm going to strangle you tonight," you're pretty much on your own. Google provides an abuse reporting area, but really, a call to the police should be your first move. In a trial, emails are certainly admissible as evidence.

    Ignore it

The moral high road isn't fun, but if it were, it wouldn't be so moral and high. It might be satisfying to see your foe banned from Facebook or Twitter, but maybe the best satisfaction is not giving them the satisfaction. Harassing tweets? Ignore them. Rude IM? Ignore. Petty Facebook comment? Ignore. The silent treatment is the best way to make a bully bored?and when they're bored, they'll move on in search of a better reaction.

    Seal yourself off

Block and delete. You probably don't want something insulting you on your own wall???what are you, a chump? So delete it and block the infringer. If you really want to piss someone off, hide your wall and photos from the bully without blocking them entirely???a nice middle finger, albeit not the most mature move. Create a filter on Gmail that'll send their email straight to the trash?be sure to let them know first. Block 'em on Twitter. It'll be like they never existed in the first place.

    Fight back?

And then, there's this. The counterattack. This is risky, and perhaps even ill-advised, but a troll can be shocked into submission by the power of your own typing. I'm ugly? No, you're ugly, and we all know why your parents got divorced. Oh, I'm an idiot because I support [Presidential Candidate]? Here's an educated, 500 word explanation of how you don't have your facts straight. Mic drop. Shut up. Posting an embarrassing picture of me on Facebook? Cool! Here's an album of that time you puked in my basement and fell asleep in it. Maybe I'll tag your parents in the middle of the puddle.

Is this petty? Yes. Will it potentially make your situation exponentially worse? Yes. But is there a perverse joy in fighting it out online? Of course???it's in the Web's soul. Just be ready for a long engagement that publicly degrades everyone involved.

Women's Sexual Fantasies: "It's Raining Men, Hallelujah ...

In 1990, my good friend Bruce Ellis and Donald Symons published a classic paper in the Journal of Sex Research wherein they investigated sex differences in sexual fantasies via an evolutionary lens. This was a clever way to demonstrate the evolved sexual dimorphisms in human sexuality using novel data. Some of their key findings included that men fantasize more frequently than women; about a larger number of partners; and involving more strangers. Furthermore, men were less focused on emotional issues and on touching but more so on visual imagery. Finally, in men?s fantasies getting to the sex occurred more rapidly (no need for long preludes!). I describe this study in my trade book The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature, when discussing how the content in pornographic movies targeting men is congruent with their evolved fantasies. On a related note, see my earlier post here about ?money shots? and men?s sperm motility.

In today?s post, I?d like to cover key findings of a recent study by Petri Nummi and Jani Pellikka published in Annales Zoologici Fennici in which they investigated women's preferred sexual fantasies, and whether these vary as a function of where a woman is in her menstrual cycle. Four types of fantasies were covered: one female with one male (FM), one female with two males (FMM), two females and one male (FFM), and two females and two males (FFMM). Of course, in each of the latter four scenarios, the female participants were presumed to partake in the fantasy. Some of the researchers? predictions were that women would find the FMM fantasy more arousing than the FFM and FFMM counterparts; Furthermore, they would find the FFMM fantasy more arousing than the FFM one; Finally, the FMM fantasy would be more arousing when women are in the maximally fertile phase of their menstrual cycle. Women were asked to provide rank-ordered preferences of the four fantasies (n = 119). The theoretical argument is based on sperm competition, namely women?s sexual fantasies are in part shaped by the desire to promote such competition (from multiple men) when pursuing a short-term ?shopping for good genes? mating strategy.

Here are the key findings: (1) While the FM fantasy was the overall preferred one, FMM was preferred both to FFM (p < .001) and FFMM (p < .001); (2) FFMM was preferred to FFM (p < .001); (3) Depending on which days were used to denote the fertile window of the menstrual cycle (days 12 through 18; days 13 through 19), the FMM fantasy was preferred to a greater extent during that phase (p = .056) but only for women who were not using hormonal contraception (as would be expected).

The bottom line: Short of the one-on-one scenario, women seem to have a penchant for multiple male partners (at least when fantasizing) and especially so when maximally fertile. The Weather Girls and Miquel Brown captured this preference quite vividly in their respective classic disco hits ?It?s Raining Men? and ?So Many Men So Little Time?!

This study once again dispels the ignorant notion that evolutionary psychologists presume that women are virginal and chaste while men are out to spread their seeds far and wide. Both sexes have the capacity for monogamous unions, and both sexes can let loose given the right conditions!

The 4 Root Causes of All Work Place Problems | ConnectorsWerk

The people responsible for the growth and success of businesses have to deal with frustrations and challenges every day. These things keep them from doing what they do best and steal time from their daily responsibilities.

All internal challenges and frustrations are triggered by one or more of four root causes. There are a multitude of symptoms, but only four causes. Creating strategies for eliminating or minimizing frustrations and challenges starts with understanding the causes.

One root cause is a lack of understanding or attachment to the purpose of the business and the values, standards, and principles that guide the business. This has nothing to do with a mission statement or marketing messages. It?s the lack of a complete buy in to ?This is who we are,? ?This is why we exist,? and ?This is the way we behave while serving our customers and interacting with our co-workers.?

People give freely of their time, money and energy to charitable, volunteer and service organizations because of a belief in what these organizations stand for, the way they conduct themselves, and the results they are focused on achieving. The best work place results are achieved by employees who have the same type of attachment to the businesses for which they work.

The employees of every business should be strongly attached to the purpose of that business. Nothing keeps people going in good times or bad better than attachment to a purpose they believe in. When an individual?s attachment to a purpose is weak, indifference develops and productivity and morale suffer.

Another root cause is a lack of belief in the reality of stated expectations and the reasonableness of the evaluation process. I once worked with a business owner who told his sales force that he expected the sale of 28 units every month. A total of 28 units was a reasonable expectation based on marketing results and opportunities generated. However, twenty units were the most ever sold in any given month. The sales people didn?t believe they could sell 28 units so they didn?t even try. I suggested that the goal be set at 21 for a month. Twenty units had been sold more than once so 21 was a believable goal. I know it was believable because I asked. Once 21 units were sold the goal could have been moved to 22 or 23. The owner refused to give the idea a try. His expectations were never met. I?m convinced the 28 unit goal could have been reached over time by starting with believable expectations.

Napoleon Hill said, ?Whatever you can conceive and believe you can achieve.? Believe is the key word. If there is no belief, expected results will never be achieved.

We are all constantly evaluated by others according to the spoken or unspoken criteria of the evaluators. While we?re being evaluated we also evaluate others based on our criteria. Problems arise in the workplace when people don?t know the criteria against which they?ll be evaluated or the criteria are subjective rather than objective.

Employees who aren?t attached to the business purpose and believe the standards of measurement are unreasonable have a tendency to under-perform.

A third root cause is a lack of buy in to the guidance employees receive that helps them perform well. This is a function of the completeness and clarity of policies, processes and systems, and the management philosophy of the business. Employees who believe the business is structured to help them be successful as individuals, and offers them opportunities to grow and advance always perform better than those who don?t have the same view.

The fourth root cause is an ineffective communication management system. I believe that the three root causes mentioned above exist because of ineffective communication. So, in my opinion, this is the BIG one. Unclear, incomplete communication can create problems and frustrations daily. Verbal communication delivered in an inappropriate tone, regardless of intent, can create daily hassles. One theory is up to 90% of workplace problems are caused by tone of voice.

The communication management system is the most important system for any business. Even the smallest glitch in this system can cause huge negative effects.

The good news is that all of this is fixable. The first step is learning the perceptions of employees in these areas. Once that information is known strategies can be developed to correct wrong perceptions and to create effective policies, processes and systems to eliminate these root causes.

We specialize in eliminating these root causes to help create businesses that work better and are better places to work.
