DENVER- A Clifton man accused of threatening to blow up a Mesa County refinery has learned his fate.Authorities say in August of 2012, Michael Schonlau, 37, called the FBI implying that he was suicidal.
He said he had connected an explosive device to a large propane tank, and had his hand on a "Dead Man's Switch", indicating he would detonate the tank near the Gilsonite Refinery, in Fruita.
Authorities closed roadways, evacuated homes and businesses, and shut down the railroad.
After Schonlau was persuaded to leave the refinery, no explosives could be found.
On Monday Schonlau was sentenced to 15 months for willfully making a threat, and maliciously conveying false information, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
