The problem is that entering into this type of marketplace can be fraught with pitfalls. There are challenges in any kind of marketing, but this is especially true of international marketing. No matter what the language that you are translating to, Chinese to Spanish, German, Russian, or French, marketing has its own language which must also be looked at.
How can you convey your products and services accurately in a language that you do not know, to a culture that you are not a part of? Given the many businesses today that are dependent upon selling their products globally, translators have over time -- learned those businesses and become experienced in translation of the products and services.
Business or corporate translation services can vary dramatically, depending of course on the business that you are in. When you require translation for a medical business, the language style and the tone used will be vastly different from what is necessary for a software company.
This is what makes it imperative to use corporate translation services who have a team of translators in place for your work. The team approach is much more effective when accomplishing business translation because there will typically be someone who is experienced or has expertise in your type of business.
For those who are very inexperienced in hiring translation teams, there are some guidelines that you can use which will prove helpful in a European Standard that was released in 2006 entitled "Translation Services - Service Requirements." EN 15038. Even if you and your business are located in The United States or Florida, the European Standard is relevant to your translation services.
The European Standard, while not perfect, does offer some quality guidance on the topics of translation project management, competency in linguistics, as well as offering information about relationships with clients and businesses and technical guidance. It is well worth the time to review and understand the meat of the standard in order to more effectively select and assess your own translation team.
In addition to the methods and guidance mentioned in the European Standard, one further method used assess the potential quality of a translation team is to look at their quality assurance and hiring standards. Check out their certifications and the certifications of the translators who will be working on your project. While not all encompassing, they are a good indication of the kind of quality and training that the company brings to the table.
