'Homeland' Season 3: Where Carrie, Brody And Saul Go From Here, According To Alex Gansa

Where will "Homeland" Season 3 pick up for Carrie (Claire Danes), Brody (Damian Lewis) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin)?

Sunday's Season 2 finale left the CIA in a state of devastation, and it's clear many things will change when "Homeland" returns next season. "David Estes is dead, and Danny Galvez is dead and 450 intelligence officers," executive producer Alex Gansa said a behind-the-scenes video from Showtime. "Saul now is the ranking officer at the CIA. He will be the acting director of the CIA when we come back and he needs all the help he can get. The agency's been decimated. Carrie feels a tremendous tug to go back to him so obviously we'll start next season, in some fashion, with Carrie and Saul really at the heart of that institution and Brody clearly on the run and hiding some place."

Reflecting on the show's Season 2 finale, HuffPost TV's Maureen Ryan wrote: "If [Brody is] alive, in Season 3, we get a Carrie who is not wrecked by his death, a Carrie who can dive right in to the search for the CIA bombers without spinning out into hysterical grief and manic rage. A living Brody also gives Carrie a very serious secret, something she must hide from Saul and the rest of her colleagues even as she works to clear the former Marine's name. That kind of thing is catnip to the show's writers, and I can see why that was a hard development to resist."

But Gansa told Entertainment Weekly that the plans for "Homeland" Season 3 aren't etched in stone just yet. "We know roughly what Season 3 is. There?s some big muscular moves that we know will happen but there?s a lot to be filled in still ... I think all of us on the writing staff would rather not do an impending attack that Carrie stops for the third year in a row. Having said that, we haven?t found that narrative engine that?s going to take us through the third season so I have to reserve judgment. We?re looking for something that?s smaller."
