Staples offering $75 discount on Microsoft Surface RT tablets

microsoft-surface-rt-tablet-staples-deal

While Microsoft is touting that its new Surface Pro tablet has already sold out its initial shipment, the Surface RT is another story. We don't know exactly how many of the consumer-based tablets have been sold, and whether those sales have met Microsoft's expectations or not.

If you want to read the tea leaves a little, office retailer Staples is offering a $75 coupon for any Windows system, whether desktop, laptop, or tablet. Considering the company is sold out of the Surface Pro, that means the discount can be applied to the Surface RT.

Though the deal covers a range of products -- including the Asus Vivo Tab that also runs Windows RT -- it is notable that Microsoft is allowing its new slates to be included. We haven't seen the Surface RT discounted to date from its $499 base price, but now you can grab one for $424 for a 32GB model, or $524 for a 64GB version. You can get the deal by applying coupon code?99279?when you check out online; free shipping is included.

Priced the same as the latest iPad, but moving just a fraction of the units Apple shifts, the Surface RT may see other discounts in the coming months. If that's the case, Microsoft can at least console itself with the positive buzz over the Surface Pro.

Will you buy a Surface RT with the Staples discount? Let us know in the Talkback section below.

Pinstripe pedigree: Bronx Bowser joins Westminster

(AP) ? Ladies and gentlemen, now warming up in the Westminster dogpen, the Bronx Bowser.

Meet sweet Mitch, a 5-year-old yellow Labrador retriever. He's a rookie at America's top dog show, yet he comes with a pinstripe pedigree ? his co-owner is New York Yankees President Randy Levine.

"He's like Derek Jeter. Very calm," Levine said.

So on the week baseball spring training begins for pitchers and catchers, Levine will be among the pinschers and cockers. The Westminster Kennel Club show starts Monday, with Mitch set to walk the show ring on Tuesday morning.

"I don't think Randy would be half as excited if it was the World Series," fellow co-owner and breeder Tom Flaherty said.

Mitch is following a long trail of Yankees pawprints. Lou Gehrig brought his German shepherd to Madison Square Garden and former ace Mike Mussina sent his Irish setter. Jacob Ruppert, the team owner who acquired Babe Ruth, showed St. Bernards.

The 137th Westminster features 2,721 entries in 187 breeds and varieties and includes a pair of newcomers, the treeing Walker coonhound and the Russell terrier.

Among the top contenders are a prime Doberman named Veni Vidi Vici that reached the best-of-seven final ring last year, a big-winning wire fox terrier, a German wirehaired pointer ranks as the nation's No. 1 show dog and a prized American foxhound.

"A strong field," veteran Westminster broadcaster David Frei said.

Malachy the Pekingese wobbled off the green carpet with the best in show bowl last February. His 9-month-old grandson is entered this time.

The herding, toy, nonsporting and hound group winners will be chosen Monday night on CNBC. The working, sporting and terrier champs come Tuesday night on the USA Network, with judge Michael Dougherty making his pick ? along with a first runner-up ? shortly before 11 p.m.

Wearing a Yankees dog collar, and falling asleep on a pinstriped blanket while listening to Josh Groban songs, Mitch is among 54 Labs in the show (golden retrievers lead with 61). By the way, the Yankees in their century-plus history have never had a player named Mitch.

"Mitch is one of the kindest dogs ever. A very kind nature, a very kind face," said Flaherty, of Mount Bethel, Pa. "He has never met anyone or any animal he didn't like."

Labs have long been among the country's most popular dogs, but have never won at Westminster. Nor have golden retrievers, Dachshunds or Chihuahuas.

"A Labrador is not a flashy dog. They're not showy dogs. They're just not something your eye is drawn to," Flaherty said.

Levine, a former New York City deputy mayor in Rudolph Giuliani's administration and known for his rugged negotiating style, did not grow up with pets.

His first pet was a goldfish, Hoover, which he shared with wife Mindy. The couple now have four dogs living with them ? over the years, they've filled their Manhattan apartment with rescue, therapy and special needs dogs, and Levine is on the board of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Officially named Hedgelawn's Sharper Image, Mitch has achieved grand champion status in the dog world. He's also a descendant of Mr. Reid, Levine's beloved Lab.

Frequently a spectator at this show, Levine is eager to participate this time.

"This is Mitch's first time. Let him get his paws wet," he said. "I'm excited. It's like a playoff game for me. It's Westminster, it's the whole environment."

Levine realizes some fans paying $25 per ticket might stop by to chat with him about pennants, more than pooches.

"That's OK," he said. "Let them come to cheer for Mitch."

Here's a Cuba Travel Insurance Question? - Havana Times.org

February 11, 2013 | | Print?Print |

QUESTION: I know that visitors to Cuba must have travel health insurance before entry into Cuba is granted, and that this insurance is available to be purchased from the official provider ASISTUR in the airport on arrival if required.

However, I have recently been diagnosed with a brain tumour, and am just completing my radio therapy treatment.? Would it be possible to buy travel health insurance for this existing condition from ASISTUR ? And if it is possible can it be purchased from the UK before we travel so we have the peace of mind of knowing that I am covered?

We really want to visit Cuba this Easter time as it would make a great place to recover from the effects of my treatment, sun sea sand etc. Also, I have always wanted to see Havana.? We would really like to be able to see some? ballet while we were in Havana too, as both of my children are ballet dancers, my son is just auditioning to get into dance schools in London.

However, the cost of purchasing travel health insurance in the UK which would include cover for my brain tumour is going to be more than the cost of the all-inclusive 4-5 star twin centre holiday we would like to take.

Any assistance or advice you could offer would be gratefully received.

ANSWER: Dear HT reader, the best way to clarify this very specific insurance need question is by writing the Asistur people directly.? Be persistent if you don?t give you a prompt reply.? The assistance e-mail address is near the top left of this link for Asistur in English. http://www.asistur.cu/indexi.php ?Please let us know the results of your inquiry so we can inform other readers.

McCain chides Republicans on immigrants: 'What do you want to do ...

By David Edwards
Sunday, February 10, 2013 10:47 EST

?

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Sunday challenged Republican lawmakers who oppose a bipartisan agreement to give legal status to undocumented immigrants as a part of comprehensive immigration reform.

?The are 11 million people living in the shadows, I believe that they deserve to come out of the shadows,? the Arizona senator told Fox News host Chris Wallace.

?Under your plan ? although they wouldn?t get the path to citizenship until you got this border enforcement certification ? they would almost immediately get probationary legal status, which basically means that they could continue to live in this country legally,? Wallace noted. ?Some of your critics on the right are saying that?s amnesty.?

?Well, I don?t think it is amnesty to start with,? McCain insisted. ?Second of all, what do you want to do with them??

?Third of all, it?s a tough path to citizenship, you have to pay back tax and learn English and have to have a clear record and get to the back of the line behind to the people who have come here legally or waiting legally. So, I just reject that.?

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and other conservatives have blasted the bipartisan immigration reform proposal, arguing that the focus should be on securing the border without providing a path to citizenship.

?I have deep concerns with the proposed path to citizenship,? Cruz recently said. ?To allow those who came here illegally to be placed on such a path is both inconsistent with rule of law and profoundly unfair to the millions of legal immigrants who waited years, if not decades, to come to America legally.?

US condemns attack on refugee camp in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The State Department is condemning the rocket and mortar attack that killed six people and wounded dozens of others at a refugee camp near Baghdad's international airport.

In a statement issued Saturday, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland denounced what she called "the vicious and senseless terrorist attack" and offered condolences from the United States to the families of the victims.

Nuland acknowledged that the Iraqi government is investigating the attack and called on the government to take all appropriate measures to enhance security for its people.

More than 3,000 people live at the camp. The government of Iraq has asked the international community to hasten the resettlement of the refugees.

Obama's State of the Union will focus on the economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will focus his State of the Union address on boosting job creation and economic growth at a time of high unemployment, underscoring the degree to which the economy could threaten his ability to pursue second-term priorities such as gun control, immigration policy and climate change.

Obama also may use Tuesday's prime-time address before a joint session of Congress to announce the next steps for concluding the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Obama's State of the Union marks his second high-profile speech to the nation in about three weeks, after his inaugural address Jan. 21 that opened his second term. White House aides see the two speeches as complementary, with Tuesday's address aimed at providing specifics to back up some of the Inauguration Day's lofty liberal rhetoric.

The president previewed the address during a meeting Thursday with House Democrats and said he would speak "about making sure that we're focused on job creation here in the United States of America." Obama said he would try to accomplish that by calling for improvements in education, boosting clean energy production, and reducing the deficit in ways that don't burden the middle class, the poor or the elderly.

While those priorities may be cheered by some Democrats, they're certain to be met with skepticism or outright opposition from many congressional Republicans, especially in the GOP-controlled House. The parties are at odds over ways to reduce the deficit. Republicans favor spending cuts; Obama prefers a combination of spending cuts and increasing tax revenue.

The president said he would address taxes and looming across-the-board budget cuts, known as the sequester, in the speech. The White House and Congress have pushed back the automatic cuts once, and Obama wants to do it again in order to create an opening for a larger deficit reduction deal.

"I am prepared, eager and anxious to do a big deal, a big package that ends this governance by crisis where every two weeks or every two months or every six months we are threatening this hard-won recovery," he said last week.

The economy has rebounded significantly from the depths of the recession and has taken a back seat for Obama since he won re-election in November. He's instead focused on campaigns to overhaul the nation's patchwork immigration laws and enact stricter gun control measures following the massacre of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., in December.

The president also raised expectations for action this year on climate change after devoting a significant amount of time to the issue in his address at the inauguration.

But the unemployment rate is persistently high at 7.9 percent, economic growth slowed last quarter and consumer confidence is falling, so the economy could upend Obama's plans to pursue a broader domestic agenda in his final four years in office.

Tony Fratto, who worked in the White House during President George W. Bush's second term, said Obama has to show the public that he's still focused on the economy before he can get their full support for his other proposals.

"We're not in a position where he can blame anybody else for the economy now," Fratto said, "Now it's his economy."

Obama is expected to use his address to press lawmakers to back his immigration overhaul, which includes a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants, and his gun control proposals, including universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.

Voting rights groups expect the president to call for changes that would make it easier for people to vote.

"I think it's important to be able to do more than one thing at a time," said David Axelrod, who served as senior adviser in the White House and Obama's re-election campaign. "But the economy is an ongoing and significant challenge that you have to keep working on."

While the centerpiece of Obama's address is expected to be his domestic agenda, the president sees a chance to outline the next steps in bringing the protracted war in Afghanistan to an end. He's facing two pressing decisions: the size and scope of the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan after the war formally ends late next year, and the next phase of the troop drawdown this year.

More than 60,000 U.S. troops are in Afghanistan.

The president could update the public on cuts to the number of U.S. nuclear weapons, a priority for his administration. Vice President Joe Biden recently told a security conference in Germany that Obama probably would use the State of the Union to discuss "advancing a comprehensive nuclear agenda to strengthen the nonproliferation regime, reduce global stockpiles and secure nuclear materials."

White House allies are nudging Obama's team to move forward on a plan to expand education for children before they enter kindergarten. They are reminding Obama's political aides that female voters gave the president a second term, serving up a 10-point gender gap.

Obama carried 55 percent of female voters, many of whom are looking to the White House for their reward. While groups such as Latinos and gays have seen policy initiatives since Election Day, women's groups have not received the same kinds of rollouts.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising Republican star and potential 2016 presidential candidate, will deliver the GOP response following Obama's address to Congress.

The president will follow up his speech with trips across the country to promote his calls for job creation. Stops are planned Wednesday in Asheville, N.C., and Thursday in Atlanta.

Obama's speechwriters started working on Tuesday's address shortly after the November election. The process is being led for the first time by Cody Keenan, who is taking over as the president's chief speechwriter.
