India unveils statue of cosmonaut Gagarin

A statue of the world's first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, was unveiled Friday in Mumbai on the grounds of the Nehru Science Center, center officials said.

Dignitaries attending the unveiling ceremony Friday included Russian Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin, Russian General Consul in Mumbai Alexei Novikov and Mumbai Mayor Shraddha Jadhav.

"Gagarin is a man who is known and loved around the world, including India. He visited India and was in Bombay, as Mumbai was called then. Mumbai's older generation still remembers his visit," Anil Manekar, the director of the Nehru Science Center, told RIA Novosti.

About 700,000 people visit the Science Center each year, he said.

"Interest in science, in space research, is very high in India. We are confident this bust of Gagarin will be an important attraction for our center," he said.

The bust of Gagarin has been placed near the Science Center's main entrance.

India already has another monument to Gagarin, located on the grounds of the Russian Science and Culture Center in the southern city of Trivandum.

Iran blocks former president's website ahead of vote (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran has blocked the website of influential former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani ahead of parliamentary elections, for carrying pro-reform critical statements, Iran's semi-official ILNA news agency reported on Friday.

The clerical establishment has increased pressure on the pro-reform opposition ahead of the March 2 vote, the first nationwide poll since a 2009 disputed presidential vote that triggered prolonged and widespread anti-government protests.

In the past days, some leading reformist figures have been sentenced to long-term jail sentences.

Rafsanjani, who heads a powerful body that resolves disputes between parliament and a hardline clerical body, sided with the opposition after the 2009 vote, which critics say was rigged to secure hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election.

Rafsanjani's daughter Faezeh was detained briefly during the eight months of protests that followed the vote.

She went on trial last week on charges of "campaigning against the Islamic establishment."

"The site management was asked few days ago to purge the site and as an example omit the last Friday prayer sermons conducted by Ayatollah Rafsanjani," his younger brother Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani was quoted by ILNA as saying.

"The company which provides service to Ayatollah Rafsanjani's website announced last night that they have been ordered to cut services to the site and few minutes later it was out of service."

During the sermon, Rafsanjani angered hardline rulers by saying that the country was in crisis, demanding an end to arrests of the opposition members.

Clashes erupted between police and supporters of the opposition after Rafsanjani's sermon.

Iranian authorities say the 2009 vote was healthiest in the past three decades and have accused the United States and Israel of backing the opposition to overthrow the clerical establishment.

The registration of hopefuls for the parliamentary vote, a litmus test for the popularity of Iran's hardline rulers, ended on Friday with more than 4,500 candidates registered. They will be screened for their political and Islamic qualifications by the hard-line Guardian Council electoral watchdog.

Analysts say Ahmadinejad's allies want to secure a majority in the assembly, aiming to win the presidential vote in 2013.

Leading reformist politicians said pro-reform political parties have decided not to provide a separate list of candidates because the basic needs of a "free and fair" vote have not been fulfilled.

However, hard-line cleric Ahmad Khatami on Friday urged people to actively participate in the vote.

Authorities are concerned that a low turnout will further harm the establishment's legitimacy. Frustration is simmering among lower- and middle-class Iranians over Ahmadinejad's economic policies. Prices of most consumer goods have risen substantially and many people struggle to make ends meet.

The 2009 vote and its aftermath plunged Iran into its biggest internal crisis since the 1979 Islamic revolution and has created a deepening rift among the country's hardline rulers.

Thousands of people, including senior reformers, were detained after the vote for fomenting unrest. Most of them have since been released, but more than 80 people have been jailed for up to 15 years and five have been sentenced to death.

Mousavi, a former prime minister, and Karoubi, a cleric and a former parliament speaker who also stood against Ahmadinejad, have been under house arrest since February and denied any contact with the outside world.

Washington State women beat Oregon 75-47

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Rosetta Adzasu scored 15 points on a perfect shooting night and teammate Jazmine Perkins had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Washington State to a 75-47 victory over Oregon in both teams' Pac-12 conference opener Thursday night.

Adzasu was 6-for-6 from the field and went 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first half, sparking Washington State (7-6, 1-0 Pac-12) to a 17-point halftime lead that was never in serious jeopardy.

Oregon (8-5, 0-1) tried to claw its way back into contention with an 11-0 run midway through the second half, keyed by a three-pointer and a long jumper from Deanna Weaver, but Washington State ended it when Perkins made a layup to end a four-minute scoreless stretch.

Oregon senior Jasmin Holliday stepped up in the absence of Amanda Johnson and Nia Jackson, who both missed the game due to injury. Holliday finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Swiss league punishes FC Sion to avoid FIFA ban

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:43 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2011

GENEVA (AP) -The Swiss Football Association moved to avoid suspension from world football Friday by handing FC Sion a 36-point penalty in a long-running dispute over the club's fielding of ineligible players.

The Swiss FA said its decision to penalize Sion three points for every league game in which ineligible players played was a response to FIFA's threat to suspend all Swiss clubs, including FC Basel and the national side, from taking part in international matches.

Basel is due to meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 on Feb. 22, a rare foray into the upper echelons of international football for a club from Switzerland.

FIFA had given the Swiss Football Association until Jan. 14, 2012, to discipline Sion or face suspension over the saga that began in 2009, when world football's governing body imposed a one-year transfer ban on the club for illegally signing goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary.

Sion, which ignored the transfer embargo and signed six players in the offseason, has doggedly contested FIFA's ruling in the courts despite facing increasingly harsh penalties from football authorities.

"The Swiss Football Association has today demanded from FIFA confirmation that the suspension will not now come into effect," the league said in a statement. "FIFA's answer is still being awaited."

FIFA said in a statement that it took note of the Swiss league's action and would consider it at an Emergency Committee meeting in early January.

The penalty for Sion falls short of FIFA's demand to also forfeit most of the club's results this season, as this would automatically have resulted in opposing sides gaining the points deducted from Sion, the league said.

The Swiss Football Association said Sion now stands last in the league table, with minus five points, but can continue to play in the country's cup competition. The points deduction may be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
