TRAVERSE CITY -- To kick off this October as breast cancer awareness month, more than 500 people laced up their sneakers for the 18th Annual Remembrance Run in Traverse City this past Saturday.? Awareness wasn't only the idea but also support.

"The event was developed to help support women going through breast cancer and originally it had the intent of helping them with non-medical needs," says director of the Remembrance Run, Karen Wells.

Wells says 100% of the proceeds from the run goes towards the Munson Women's Cancer Fund.? The fund provides financial assistance for what health insurance does not cover when a patient is undergoing treatment.

"When you're diagnosed with breast cancer it's not just the physical trauma but also the financial piece and some of that women who are receiving treatment won't be able to maintain their jobs because they can't work during treatment so that's a huge stress on them," says Wells.

Events like the Remembrance Run help provide a sense of relief.

"I think anytime you can reduce the stress in someone else whose undergoing cancer treatment that is always going to have a positive effect on their overall well-being," says registered nurse and oncology patient educator with Munson Medical Center, Laurie Patrick.

Patients are referred to Patrick if they're in need of financial assistance during cancer treatments.? She says community members coming together all to "think pink" is key to keeping awareness alive.

"It is incredible the amount of support this community has for people with cancer.? It's something I'm proud of...the direct effect of the women's cancer fund can help them," says Patrick.

For people like Karen Wells, she understands first-hand the need to remind the public.

"Both grandmothers had breast cancer, my sister had it.? At any moment I could be diagnosed so I have a passion to help in this way...I do this because I have neighbor right now whose breast cancer moved to her brain and it's going rampant through her body.? Each time I get overwhelmed with putting on this event I just think of her and it doesn't take much to re-energize me when I think of what she's going through," says Wells.

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd has collaborated with software security company, McAfee, to offer McAfee Internet Security and McAfee? Family Protection software.

Ex-wife testifies in Conn. hostage-arson case (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A Connecticut woman says she was terrified when her ex-husband fired a gun a few inches from her head after kidnapping her and holding her hostage for several hours in 2009.

Nancy Tyler testified Wednesday at Richard Shenkman's trial on kidnapping, assault, arson and other charges. His lawyer is planning an insanity defense.

Tyler said Shenkman fired the gun into a wall as she was on the phone with police. He had brought her from a Hartford parking garage to a South Windsor home they once shared.

Tyler said he handcuffed her to an eyebolt in the basement, and she managed to loosen it and escape. About an hour later Shenkman surrendered to police as flames engulfed the house.

The couple had been going through bitter post-divorce court proceedings.

Mass. man charged in terror plot pleads not guilty (AP)

WORCESTER, Mass. ? A Massachusetts man pleaded not guilty Monday to plotting to fly explosives-packed remote-controlled model planes into the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

The bail hearing that had been scheduled for 26-year-old Rezwan Ferdaus of Ashland was delayed for several weeks because his lawyer, Catherine Byrne, asked for more time to prepare.

Authorities said Ferdaus, a Muslim American with a physics degree from Northeastern University, was arrested in Framingham last week after federal agents posing as al-Qaida members delivered what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosive. They said the public was never in danger from the plot.

"This case was orchestrated and facilitated by the government," Byrne told reporters as she left the federal courthouse Monday. "We have asked for a continuance for additional time in order to prepare and to further investigate so that we can present a more complete picture of what happened."

The arrest was the latest in a string of terror arrests to emerge from similar sting operations. A federal affidavit says Ferdaus began planning jihad against the U.S. in early 2010 after becoming convinced through jihadi websites and videos that America was evil.

A group of nearly a dozen family members and friends attended Ferdaus' court appearance. Several women, including his mother, wept as the charges against him were read. They shouted "We love you!" as he was led out of the courtroom; he quietly answered "I love you, too."

Also in attendance were the parents of Tarek Mehanna, another Massachusetts man arrested in a different terror plot. They said they did not know Ferdaus' family but came to show their support. Mehanna is scheduled for trial later this month; authorities say he conspired to provide material support to al-Qaida and kill U.S. troops in Iraq.

Ferdaus faces as much as 100 years in prison on charges including attempting to damage and destroy national defense premises and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. A detention hearing is set for Oct. 20.
